Deciding what to study at university is one of the most important decisions that a student will ever make, and now there are more degree subjects to choose from than ever before. So if you want to study a subject that is a bit different from all the others, then you should check out this list of the weirdest university degrees.

1. Horology

This degree is a combination of time measurement and art; this degree will help set you up for a career in the luxury watch industry. This degree is on offer at Birmingham City University and gives you the chance to study electronic and mechanical watches and teaches you traditional craftsmanship skills in a modern way. The course is held in the city’s Jewellery Quarter and is great if you are wanting to go into a traditional career with a modern twist.

2. Brewing and Distilling

If you really love your alcohol (and let’s face it most students do), then you should look into doing an MSc Brewing and Distilling at Heriot-Watt University in the city of Edinburgh. To succeed in this course, you need to have a keen interest in the science of the brewing process rather than just enjoying the drinking and social side to it. This degree is not actually as useless as you may initially think as the top employers in the beverage industry tend to recruit from graduates with this degree.

3. Animal Behaviour and Psychology

If you’ve dreamed of what it would be like to be Dr Doolittle, then this degree is the one for you! This course is offered at the University of Chester teaches you about the way animals think and act with a focus on their natural habitats and conservation. You could go to be a wildlife technician or a veterinary assistant, so this subject does come with a wide scope of careers available to you. Another similar course to this one is Equestrian Psychology and Sports Science, but this course obviously focuses more on horses rather than animals in general.

4. Sexual Health Studies

The Sexual Health Studies course at the University of Central Lancashire is the first of its kind in the UK and is the perfect fit for someone looking to start a career in the sexual health services. This course helps you to learn about the impact of sexual health on the individual and wider community and will learn about contraception, unplanned pregnancies and relationships.

5. Circus and Physical Performance

Despite what it sounds like, this degree is not all about clowning around. This degree is offered at Bath Spa University and definitely sounds like one of the most fun degrees out there. This course will allow you to become a creative artist who has learned a variety of circus skills, but you can only gain a place on this course after you have successfully completed the two-year foundation circus foundation degree.

6. Floral Design

Myerscough College offers this course which focuses on historical flower design and business planning to students who are hoping to go on and open their own florists. This course is also perfect for students wanting to perfect their design skills and sounds like the most relaxing course out there!

7. Puppetry Design and Performance

If you are a fan of The Muppets, then a degree in Puppetry Design and Performance from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama seems like the perfect course for you. They are also currently developing a Masters course in puppetry, so there is room for advancement.

8. Surf Science and Technology

In this course, you will get to learn about the history of surf and surfing techniques (including how to build your own surfboard) and will be given a chance to undertake work experience with a surf-related company. Take this course at your own risk though, British waters are never that warm, so you are sure to be cold after your practical classes!

On offer at the University of Kent is this masters degree in stand-up comedy, which is sure to be different from any postgraduate qualification that your friends are undertaking. This course gives students the chance to improve their performance skills and their understanding of this popular aspect of British comedy culture.

10. Baking Technology Management

This degree at London South Bank University is perfect for any pro-bakers out there! The course is two years long, but unfortunately, you do not just bake in every class, you also have to write essays as well as pass theory exams and undertake practical work. Students also learn skills in business management, so this course seems ideal for anyone who is thinking of starting up their own bakery business. Either way, you are sure to come out with a degree that guarantees any employer that your culinary creations are sublime.
