Edinburgh is a city full of charm and entertainment, however, its location also makes it an ideal base for day trips. We have outlined some of the best ideas for days out near Edinburgh!
Craigmillar Castle
Only a 40-minute bus ride out of the city centre, Craigmillar Castle is a perfect mini-day trip for history lovers. Once home to Mary Queen of Scots, the ancient ruin sits amongst its original gardens. Entrance into the castle grounds only costs £7.00 per adult, which gives you access to the complete site. Walking throughout the castle, you can visit Queen Mary’s bed chamber or go up to the tallest point of the castle walls for a complete panoramic view of the countryside and Edinburgh’s outskirts. The fields surrounding the castle are the ideal picnic location and the gift shop on site sells souvenirs and ice-creams for those wanting to treat themselves after the tour.
Glasgow
If you are wanting to explore a few more of Scotland’s great cities, Glasgow is a mere 1 hour and 20 minutes train ride from Edinburgh Waverley Station. As well as its cultural and historical sites such as the Necropolis and the Glasgow Science Centre, there are also many fun pubs, bars, and clubs for those fancying a night out there. There is a buzzing music scene in Glasgow, with up-and-coming bands frequenting the bars and smaller gig venues. With the last train back to Edinburgh being at 2.00am, a night out in Glasgow is high on the list for those looking to check out more of Scotland beyond Edinburgh.
North Berwick Beach
Although Edinburgh does have some lovely beaches (Portobello is a staple trip for every Edinburgh citizen), there are some superb beaches nearby which escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Located in East Lothian, North Berwick is a seaside town known for its stunning beach, quaint buildings, and gorgeous scenery. From Edinburgh Waverley, it is only a 35-minute train ride away, so the journey is an easy one on a summer’s day, or even for a wintery stroll along the sand.
The Pentlands
From Edinburgh, the Pentland Hills are an hours’ bus ride from the centre, making them a bracing alternative for a day out near Edinburgh. Twenty miles of Scottish hills ranging southwest of Edinburgh, there are several walking routes you can take to make the most of your time in the Pentlands. Although it is better to prepare before your trip here (we would recommend planning your route and wearing appropriate footwear/clothing) you will not regret the journey for the views at the top of the hills.
Roslin Village
Located in Roslin Glen, the Village of Roslin is a beautiful day trip near to Edinburgh. As it is a 45-minute bus ride from Princes Street, Roslin village is a popular day spot. Not only is Roslin Glen an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with its walking trails through the Scottish woodland, but the town itself is a sight to behold. The Chapel is a key point of beauty in the village and if architecture isn’t enough to entice you here, Roslin Village was also home to Dolly the cloned sheep.
Edinburgh is in the perfect location for fun day trips nearby. From the beaches to natural points of beauty to historical sites, there is so much to see near this city- all under two hours away.
