A crucial part of university life is mastering the art of ‘brunch’, which is no different in Leicester! In between the time of traditional breakfast and lunch, when you’re not ready for a full meal, but you’re craving something small that hits the right spot. Whether it be after an early lecture or nursing a hangover, if you’re taking family out for a catch up, or you just want something a little more classy than a pot noodle, brunch is the definition of student routine. And thankfully, Leicester city centre is filled with the best brunch spots to fulfil your cravings.
In Leicester, there are a fair share of food outlets in the city centre. Many of which are the traditional fast-food restaurants and coffee houses. I would like to put a spotlight on the independent businesses in the city, away from the bustling scenes around the Clock Tower. However, if this is your vibe I can recommend the Cafe Nero cafes as they offer a good student discount rate. Alongside Soho Coffee in Highcross, located underneath the escalators. They have a wide variety of drinks and cater to all of your brunching needs.
But here are my favourite brunch spots in Leicester city centre that I recommend to anyone passing by looking for incredible food!
My top 5 brunch spots on Leicester city centre
1. The Merchant of Venice
For any avid Shakespeare fans, this is the place for you! The Merchant of Venice has two branches, on Granby Street to Loseby Lane. It’s a coffee house that has a theatrical twist. With scenes painted on its walls and the romantic swinging window seats, this could be the perfect place for a romantic brunch too! Or if you’re just a theatre nerd or an English literature student, this is the coolest place on Earth!
With a varied menu for all points in the day, they offer a specialised Sunday brunch menu. Featuring your standard toast and jam, or why not go for a Merchant Special Bottomless Prosecco Brunch? There are plenty of vegan and vegetarian options as well, including vegan pancakes. Which I can say, as a vegan myself it is rare to see them on a menu.
They have been featured in other publications such as Leicestershire Live and Cool as: Leicester. If you want your brunch with a fun, immersive experience head on down to The Merchant of Venice!
Address: Multiple locations
2. Cosy Club Leicester
You may already be familiar with Cosy Club, from their other branches or the sister company Lounges. If you’re not already aware of them, you’re in for a treat!
The first clue is in the name, Cosy Club offers a warm and homely vibe whilst serving up luxurious food in a relaxed setting. Aiming also to make you feel welcome and part of the team when you enter this establishment.
The menu is a classic Cosy Club/ Loungers mix of traditional brunch favourites like a full English, alongside trendy, metropolitan dishes like smashed avocado and chia granola bowls. Whether you’re treating yourself, or you want nutrition, Cosy Club has got you covered! With its dim lighting, and industrial interiors, this is officially the cool place to hang out.
Address: 68 Highcross St, Leicester LE1 4NN
3. Kai Kitchen
Kai Kitchen is located in the historic St. Martin’s Square, only a short walk away from the De Montfort University campus. Sloganised as ‘Eat Well’, Kai is the healthy hub for brunch in Leicester City Centre.
Offering Pancakes, Eggs and Breakfast Cocktails, Kai can fill your need for a palette cleanser. Followed by a delicious-looking Vegan Eggs Benedict with Plant Based Sausages. A real treat for any long-term vegans, Veganuary attempters or anyone curious enough to try!
I cannot stress the importance of tasty, unique and affordable vegan options in hospitality. Often these groups get left out of mainstream chains. Catering to all preferences makes customers feel considered and cared for. Plant-based, and allergy considerate menus only benefit everyone!
Address: St Martins Square, Leicester LE1 5DF
4. Five Fox Lane
This pink, Instagrammable coffee shop is definitely one to put on your bucket list for your time in Leicester! Advertised as ‘Good Coffee, Good Vibes’, I cannot agree more! Located in the heart of the city centre on Fox Lane, they serve a variety of homemade goodness.
From classic Leicester crusty cobs, to the full English experience Five Fox Lane has it all covered! Alongside this, the interior of this cafe is beautiful!
Address: 5 Fox Ln, Leicester LE1 1WT
5. Brü Coffee and more
Promising speciality coffee, exceptional food and awesome vibes, Brü Coffee does not disappoint! One of many outlets, the Leicester branch offers a warm, edgy vibe with specialist menus.
Serving up homemade gelato and deserts, Brü is the perfect meet-up place for your group projects and your deadline brunch dates! Offering seasonal menus that wow customers, alongside pancakes, sorbet, bagels and grilled cheese Brü have got you for all your brunchin’ needs!
