ChatGPT is everywhere now! From generating songs for Sam Fender, to finding weight loss motivation, many are using the AI platform for diverse (and weird) uses! But should we be worried about how clever ChatGPT is? Well we asked it…we asked ChatGPT whether it could replace any jobs and it didn’t hold back! Find out the 20 jobs ChatGPT believes it could replace and find out more about its many functions!

1. Customer Service Representative

ChatGPT can handle customer inquiries and provide responses in a timely manner without the need for a human representative. This can be done through chatbots or other automated messaging systems that can provide quick answers to frequently asked questions. While many of us enjoy the quick response time and not having to actually speak to someone, some of us prefer to actually speak to a human!

2. Translator

Performing much better than Google translate, ChatGPT can translate text from one language to another with a high level of accuracy. This can potentially replacing human translators for some business use, which require quick translations for products or web copy. This can be particularly useful for large-scale translation projects or for situations where speed is of the essence. However, there are many situations where ChatGPT surely couldn’t be used ethically. For example, we can’t imagine lawyers logging on to the AI platform to explain to someone their legal rights in another language.

3. Content Writer

This is probably the most likely. You can literally type in to ChatGPT to write about any topic using any keyword. However, the current version of ChatGPT can only use knowledge from up to 2021, and often regurgitates similar sentence structures. So while many businesses might aim to speed up the process by using ChatGPT to populate their blogs, it’s unlikely it can replace human writers entirely.

4. Legal Assistant

ChatGPT can help with legal research and document review, potentially replacing some of the work done by human legal assistants. This can be particularly useful for simple legal tasks or for organisations that don’t have the budget for a full-time legal assistant. But it’s unlikely legal assistants will need to worry too much, as trusting an AI platform with confidential data and information is highly unethical.

5. Financial Analyst

From analysing financial data to generating insights, there are some uses of ChatGPT that compare to the work of financial analysts. However, ChatGPT cannot contextualise data or provide expert opinion. On the other hand, human analysts can take into account current events, market trends, and other relevant factors when interpreting financial data.

6. Data Entry Clerk

Similarly to financial analysts, ChatGPT has functions that can extract and input data into various systems. While this could potentially replacing human data entry clerks for basic tasks, in some cases it wouldn’t be appropriate. The AI system can’t handle or navigate complex data, nor can it handle physical documents or identify errors. Nevertheless, this job is one to watch, as basic data entry can easily be performed and replaced by Chat GPT.

7. Real Estate Agent

This is just a little far-fetched. Would you really consider buying a home over an AI platform? ChatGPT can help customers buy or sell properties, potentially replacing human real estate agents. This can be done through chatbots or other automated messaging systems that can suggest properties and provide information on the buying or selling process. It can apparently perform market analysis, valuations and listing management, all without seeing your home. Or being human.

8. Medical Transcriptionist

For basic medical tasks, ChatGPT could be used to replace medical transcriptionist jobs. This could include transcribing simple medical dictation, such as recording patient notes or dictating prescriptions. However, it’s important to note that there are limitations to automated medical transcription using ChatGPT or other AI tools. Medical dictation often includes complex medical terminology and nuanced language that may be difficult for an AI system to accurately transcribe. Additionally, there may be legal and regulatory considerations when it comes to the use of automated transcription for medical records.

9. Social Media Manager

The role of a social media manager is to generate and schedule content. This can all be done on ChatGPT. It can analyse trending topics, user engagement, and other relevant data, generating content that is likely to resonate with the target audience. However, ChatGPT falls short in that it can’t craft a brand voice, build relationships with followers, and handle complex customer inquiries.

10. Research Assistant

From data collection and analysis to constructing literature reviews, ChatGPT can help with many research tasks. It can also be used to perform statistical analyses on research data, such as running regression analyses or conducting statistical significance tests. Although it can do the bulk of the numerical part, human skills are necessary for designing the methodology and interpreting the data into discussions.

11. Personal Assistant

Another popular belief is that ChatGPT can act as a personal assistant. It can schedule appointments, send reminders, and perform other tasks typically done by human personal assistants. This can be particularly useful for individuals or small businesses who need help managing their schedule. It’s unlikely it will be able to go and pick up the dry cleaning or your mum to tell her you’re running late though.

12. Copy Editor

Another believable one in our list of jobs ChatGPT could replace. ChatGPT can proofread and edit written content, potentially replacing human copy editors. It can check style and tone, formatting and lots of other responsibilities of a copy editor. What it can’t check is that written content is engaging and compelling, and identifying potential issues with logic or flow. However, it’s probably likely copy editors will be using ChatGPT more and more.

13. Technical Support Representative

Like customer service, a lot of the work of technical support personnel is automated any way. So it makes sense ChatGPT could replace them to some degree. It can troubleshoot, answer FAQs, create technical documentation, route customer calls, and provide chat support. Despite being a somewhat sassy AI tool, ChatGPT is not good for building rapport.

14. Travel Agent

Online booking systems have generally replaced in person travel agents. Companies such as Booking.com, Expedia and AirBnB are all online. ChatGPT can also help customers plan travel itineraries and suggest destinations, potentially replacing human travel agents. Scarily, it can also book flights and accommodation apparently. But would you trust that? In five years, are we going to be at the airport confidently believing an AI tool booked us a plane ticket to the right place?

15. HR Representative

ChatGPT can provide HR support to employees, through chatbots or other automated messaging systems. They can answer employee questions and provide information on HR policies and procedures. But when it comes to logging complaints, providing training, or discussing sensitive issues, this is not something a non-human should be doing.

16. Personal Shopper

Yes, ChatGPT knows what looks good on you based on the way you type. But seriously, it can actually help customers select products to purchase, potentially replacing human personal shoppers. It can provide recommendations, price comparisons and order management, making it easier to find the right stuff.

17. Sales Representative

From generating leads, to sales analytics and customer segmentation, ChatGPT is a powerful tool to use during sales. It also claims it can help agents while they’re on the call come up with information. But until it’s experienced the kind of virtual slap in the face every agent gets at some point from cold calling, ChatGPT has no clue!

18. Inventory Manager

The AI system can track inventory levels and reorder products when necessary. This helps with stock replenishment, forecasting and tracking. It can help managers in the analysis of stock, but it can’t go out there and count physical products. So it’s unlikely inventory managers have anything to worry about – Chat GPT can’t replace these jobs.

19. Event Planner

This is a job that ChatGPT can actually be useful for. It can suggest venues and vendors, and manage guest lists and schedules. It can also help promote events on social media. However, when it comes to contacting vendors and negotiating prices, humans are definitely still needed. Just try asking ChatGPT to plan your birthday and see how many people turn up. Yes, human event planners are still a must.

20. Call Center Agent

ChatGPT can handle customer inquiries and provide responses in a call centre setting, potentially replacing human call centre agents that work online. It can’t pick up the phone and try to flog products however. Unfortunately.

If you’re worried about whether ChatGPT will replace jobs, don’t be! It’s useful and can assist with many tasks, but it can’t fully replace humans. So if you’re looking for work, check out how to find a graduate job.
