Most great businesses that evolve to be major profitable endeavours were once small ideas by university students just like you.

Facebook, for example, began as a social media platform to connect students on campus by Mark Zuckerberg. That idea now has evolved into a multi-million-dollar company and is currently in 7th place on the Fortune 500 list. As students, we tend to have a lot of free time on our hands and there is a lot we can do with it. Here are just a few easy business ideas that you could try out to get some extra cash in hand or maybe even develop into a professional business with time.

Social Media Influencer

There are plenty of students taking to social media to express their views and opinions, so why not do it and earn some cash in the process. The most common being starting a YouTube channel or becoming an influencer on either Instagram or TikTok.

Start a Website or Blog

Have you got something you’re passionate about? Then why not start a website/blog. It can serve as a great platform to feature articles and media that you find entertaining and it is also an excellent opportunity to communicate with other likeminded individuals.

Become a Freelancer

There are plenty of opportunities to write for or get involved with media outlets on a freelance basis. Have you got a passion for music and you’ve tried your hand at mixing and DJ-ing for events? Continue to do that at uni. Or if it’s something you want to get into there are plenty of opportunities!. It’ll take a small initial investment but finding used equipment on Gumtree and eBay shouldn’t be too difficult.

The opportunities in this field are endless. Students could practically do this with any item. Be it used textbooks or trainers. Upcycling used clothes is also a great initiative that one can look into.

Speaking of upcycling, many students with a creative streak, or who are great at upcycling and restoring can incorporate their talents to start a business. You can advertise and put up your refurbished items on sites such as Fiverr, Gumtree, eBay, Depop and even Facebook Marketplace.

 Modelling For or Selling Stockphotos

The beauty in stock photography is that you don’t need to be a model to feature in them after all the point of them are to look more realistic. You could either model for it or just try your hand at capturing the photos and selling them to stock photo sites.

Not technically a business, but still it’s a great way to get some cash in hand. There are many options for these ventures with numerous tutorials on how to get into trading stock online on YouTube. With practice once you’re confident enough you could ask your friends to invest in your business.


One of the many typical Unistudent jobs, it requires the least effort and you can easily find work on apps like Nextdoor or Indeed.

 Delivery Services

Have you got a car or a bike? Why not put it to use. Register with one of the many delivery apps such as Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Just Eat and many more. Or if you’ve got a coffee shop you visit frequently, you could offer the proprietor a delivery service for their customers with you leading the charge.

Got a knack for teaching? You could offer a tutoring service to your fellow students who may have missed a lecture or having trouble understanding a module. Likewise, if you’ve got a great command of the English language and a second language, you could help international students by giving classes and teaching the language whilst possibly conversing in their first language.  

Event or Trip Planning

If there are any course mates you know who are looking to do a trip, you could suggest planning their trip for them all for a small fee. Additionally, you could plan a trip to a popular destination and send out feelers for students to see if they would be interested in the journey.

Businesses are always looking out for students to answer market research surveys and fill out questionnaires. In addition to taking part in them, you could also recommend other students to businesses for the surveys for a small fee.
