As of yesterday, the current estimated date for the return of normal life is the 21st of June. This comes after 3 lockdowns and essentially a year of being scared to touch anyone or anything. The last year has seen all of us suffer and struggle, and because of this hardship, there is now a call to make June 21st a national bank holiday.
Who started the idea?
The idea took off on Twitter following Boris Johnson’s announcements on the 22nd of Feb, and has continued to grow since. There are now two petitions in the works, one calling for a Merriweather day to allow people to spend time with their loved ones, and another calling for the day to be made a bank holiday. These aren’t quite ready to be signed yet, but will be available for us to all put our names on once they’ve been confirmed. If these get 100,000 names on, they have to be discussed in parliament. And by the look on all the politicians’ faces at the moment – they may well approve the motion.
What do the general public think?
We took to social media to find out the general opinion on the new bank holiday, and I think we can safely say its a resounding YES! from the general British public.

What happens if there’s another spike?
We all know that whilst we’d love to be drinking shots of tequila and sticking to our club floors come June 21st, that it may be a while after that before we end up being able to. However, Jack Mallett who started the petition has thought of this too. The petition states that a bank holiday should be made on June 21st or whenever lockdown is ended.
Hopefully, it’s sooner rather than later – we all need a pint after the last year or so! And a haircut, for that matter. In the meantime, whilst life is still a little bit uncertain, we’re going to look for the light at the end of the tunnel and enjoy the hilarious onslaught of memes. Here are some of our favourites
We’ve already got a shopping haul planned…
Oh Aldi… you know us too well.
The day is June 21st 2021. You’ve just left Aldi to grab some cans for pres, the suns shining. You’ve chucked on that outfit you’ve been saving for months. Your favourite song comes on the radio in the cab, it’s going to be a good night. All is good.

Whenever it is, we are glad that we have time to remember how to socialise
