To make it easier for you, we’ve used the most recent research from the QS World University Rankings. The QS World University Rankings measure university performance across several core metrics: 30% for Academic Reputation, 15% for Employer Reputation, 10% for Faculty-to-Student Ratio, 20% for Citations per Faculty, and 5% each for International Faculty, International Students, International Research Network, Employment Outcomes, and Sustainability. These metrics assess academic standards, career readiness, research influence, and environmental responsibility, highlighting top-performing nations in these fields. To find the best countries for higher education in 2025, we took the top 100 universities (out of 1500 unis from 105 higher education systems across the world) and analysed how often each country appeared in this list. 

1. United States of America

Ranked the highest on our list, the US appeared 25 times and is officially the best country for higher education in 2025. It was also the country that was home to the best uni overall; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, US, as well as Harvard, Stanford and California Institute of Technology (Caltech), which all appeared in the top 10 global unis for 2025. Choosing to study in the US is of course competitive, but you’re offered such a range of lifestyles and experience – how different is California costal living to the likes of the studious Greater Boston metropolitan area?

2. United Kingdom

The UK came in as the second best place to study in higher education in 2025, appearing 15 times in the 100 top global unis list. Among the highest-ranking UK universities were…surprise surprise….Oxford and Cambridge, however the capital’s Imperial College London beat them to it, ranking as the second-best university in the world overall. UCL also came in 9th, alongside the The University of Edinburgh, The University of Manchester, University of Bristol and several others appearing in the top 100. 

3. Switzerland

Small but mighty, Switzerland punches above its weight with ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich making the top 100. Known for its precision and innovation, Switzerland is the place to be if you’re into science, tech, or just really fancy chocolate. And let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to study with the Alps as a backdrop?

4. Singapore

Singapore’s two top-ranking universities, the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), consistently perform at a global level. Known for its cutting-edge research and world-class facilities, Singapore is a hub for students aiming for excellence in education and career opportunities in Asia.

5. Australia

G’day, mate! Australia boasts nine universities in the top 100, including heavyweights like the Australian National University, the University of Melbourne, and the University of Sydney. With its laid-back lifestyle, stunning beaches, and a strong focus on research, Australia is perfect for anyone looking for both academic and personal adventure. Just watch out for the kangaroos!

6. China

China is climbing the ranks, with Tsinghua University and Peking University leading the charge. Known for its innovation and ambitious research, China offers a dynamic academic environment. Add in a rich history, vibrant cities, and some of the best dumplings you’ll ever eat, and it’s easy to see why more students are heading east.

7. Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s universities, like HKU and HKUST, are shining examples of East meets West. With a strong emphasis on research and global collaboration, these institutions are a dream for students looking to thrive in a cosmopolitan setting. Plus, you’ll get to experience one of the most exciting food scenes in the world.

8. France
