Rankings were decided based on factors including cost of living, student diversity, quality of education, social life, arts and culture and graduate career prospects. 

1. United States of America

Ranked the highest on our list, the US achieved a 4.83/5 for student diversity. It also ranks 4.82/5 for quality of education and 4.81/5 for graduate degree prospects. It’s officially the best country for higher education, offering students plenty of choice in terms of unis and lifestyles. Chicago was voted the best student city, beating others due to its wide range of things to do and university rankings. However, Stanford University in California holds the rank of the best university this year!

2. United Kingdom

The UK scored 4.51/5 coming second on the list with high rankings for student diversity, at 4.8/5, and graduate career prospects at 4.83/5. Unsurprisingly, the University of Oxford took the position of the best university this year. However the best student city was voted as Newcastle! Are you as surprised as us? But what isn’t surprising is that the UK is one of the best countries for higher education given how many unis top global ranking lists.

3. Australia

The Aussies are third on our list, with an average of 4.48/5. The strength lies in their social life, which is ranked 4.92/5. This is best achieved in Melbourne, which was voted the best student city. As for the best university, the University of Queensland hold the title. It’s a popular place for many Brits to head to, given there are similarities in the culture and language. But let’s face it, the weather and lifestyle couldn’t be more different. Australians are outdoorsy, beach-lovers who soak in the sun. Here in the UK, we think above +3C is barbecue weather! Nevertheless, Australia offers a great higher education system and is one of the best countries for going to university.

4. Germany

Fancy a bratwurst? Germany is fourth on our list, with arts and culture ranking 4.71/5 and graduate career prospects ranking 4.79/5. Their capital city, Berlin steals the spot as the best student city and Ludwig Maximillian University of Munich holds the title of the best university. Germany has a strong economy and is home to many multinational companies, offering students opportunities for internships and employment after graduation. It has a high standard of living, with affordable housing, excellent public transportation, and lots of things to do! From cute Bavarian towns to uber modern cities like Berlin, it’s unsurprising that Germany is a popular and one of the best countries for higher education.

5. Ireland

If you love arts and culture, Ireland is for you. Ranking high at 4.83/5, it comes fifth on our list. The best university also happens to be its own University College Cork. Its home, Cork, is also ranked the best student city. Beyond being one of the best countries for higher education in 2023, Ireland is known for being one of the friendliest. People are just warm and welcoming, not to mention the lively pub scene and fun festivals! 

6. Switzerland

Sixth on the list, Switzerland finds its strength in its student diversity: 4.85/5. Their quality of education is also high, at 4.79/5. Zurich took the spot as the best student city, home to the best university of this year: ETH Zurich. Switzerland houses some of the world’s leading scientific research centres, including CERN and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Additionally, Swiss universities offer a wide range of courses in various fields, including science, engineering, business, and the humanities. The country’s high standard of living, beautiful natural scenery, and rich cultural heritage also make it an attractive place to study.

7. Canada

Averaging a 4.35/5, Canada ranks seventh on our list. It’s best student city is Montreal but the best university is the University of British Columbia. It’s appeal lies in its social life, which is 4.78/5 and student diversity: 4.62/5. Canada is widely considered as one of the best countries for pursuing higher education due to its outstanding academic standards and diverse student population. Canadian cities are also known for their high standard of living, safe and friendly environment, and abundant recreational opportunities. Furthermore, international students in Canada can take advantage of various work and immigration programs to extend their stay and gain valuable work experience after graduation. Overall, Canada provides an enriching and supportive academic environment that prepares students for success in their chosen careers.

8. Denmark

With high graduate career prospects, rated 4.82/5, Denmark ranks eights. Averaging at 4.34/5, its best student city is also home to its best university: the University of Copenhagen. The country also has a strong commitment to sustainability, making it a hub for green and sustainable innovation. This is particularly appealing for students interested in sustainability, making it one of the best countries for higher education in this area. Danish institutions offer students opportunities to participate in research projects and gain hands-on experience, helping them develop practical skills and knowledge. They also emphasise student-centred learning, with small class sizes and a focus on collaborative and interdisciplinary learning. Additionally, Denmark offers a safe and welcoming environment, with a high standard of living and excellent healthcare system. 9. Netherlands

Ranking just below Denmark at 4.32/5, The Netherlands is ninth on the list. It’s strengths lie in its quality of education at 4.57/5. Their graduate career prospects is also high at 4.58/5. If you aren’t sure where in Netherlands to head, try Utrecht – the best student city.  Alternatively, the University of Amsterdam holds the title for the best university. The Netherlands is home to many international companies and organisations, offering students excellent opportunities to gain experience and start their careers after graduation. It’s also a country that speaks English widely, making it easy to get around, make friends and live there if you’re an English-speaker. 10. France

Last on our list is France. It averages at 4.31/5. Its capital city is also ranked the best student city: Paris and the best uni is Sorbonne University. The quality of education in France is ranked high at 4.61 and arts and culture at 4.55/5. Many of its universities and schools consistently rank highly in international academic rankings. The country has a long and storied history of intellectual and cultural achievement, which is reflected in its world-class educational programs. Additionally, France offers a vibrant and diverse student life, with a wide range of extracurricular activities and cultural events, making it an ideal environment for personal and professional growth.
