With the excitement of freshers’ week, it’s easy to get caught up with settling into uni life. All those late nights, 4am pizzas and rolling into lectures wearing last night’s clothes… You know the drill.

All fun and games aside, there’s often a lot more going on behind the scenes.

From today (25th September), lecturers and other uni staff across the UK are striking for five days – due to a long-running dispute over pay and working conditions.

Unfortunately, for those of you just getting stuck into freshers’ week, the timing couldn’t be any worse.

Will your uni be affected by UCU strikes?

The BBC reported that UCU members across 36 universities plan to strike from today for five consecutive days, while eleven more will strike for one day.

According to the UCU, staff at more than 140 universities are planning to take part. The BBC has stated:

“However, many UCU branches withdrew from co-ordinated strike action after constructive talks with their individual universities where they agreed to stop pay deductions during the marking boycott that took place this year.

Staff at some institutions are walking out on slightly different dates to coincide with other local action.

Action short of a strike also continues, which includes staff not covering for absent colleagues, and not rescheduling lectures or classes cancelled due to strike action.”
