It’s that time of the year again: the nights are getting darker, Christmas is just around the corner and I’m a Celebrity is back on the telly. Now that the first week of jungle fun is just about over, let’s take a look back at some of the highlights.
Sunday night saw the return of Ant and Dec (aka the nation’s favourite TV duo) and what a first episode it was. The 10 original celebrities arrived in the jungle in style, with the much-anticipated appearance of American reality super star and ex-Olympian Caitlyn Jenner being a hot topic on social media.
After a dramatic swimming race, the contestants were split into pairs, where half of the group took on a sky-dive and boat race, whilst the other half saw the return of the terrifying 334ft high plank walk. After winning the tasks, contestants Roman Kemp, Myles Stephenson, Adele Roberts and Nadine Coyle started there I’m a Celebrity journey in the luxury of the main camp, whilst the loosing pairs were sent to the alternative camp, Snake Rock.
Aside from the arguments in camp, we all know that the trials are the most entertaining part of the show. The first trial of the series was completed by all of the celebrities in Snake Rock on Monday night where viewers saw each of them subject to a face full of insects and small rodents whilst trying to un-knot two stars equating to meals. EastEnders actor Jacqueline Jossa and Caitlyn Jenner did particularly well in this challenge, with both ladies achieving the maximum number of meals for their fellow contestants.
Later trials of the week included Caitlin and ITV presenter Kate Garraway suspended above the jungle floor throwing balls into moving boxes, Adele Roberts and Roman Kemp taking on the first of the infamous eating challenges and Jacqueline and rugby player James Haskell finding keys in a hut full of snakes.
Despite it only being the first week, the camp has already seen its fair share of drama. Tensions first arose when Adele Robert’s chosen luxury item of a framed picture of Loose women presenter Jane McDonald caused a stir in main camp (it is a bit weird though isn’t it?). DJ Adele got upset when Roman said what we were all thinking and questioned why she had it, accusing him of being prejudiced towards her.
The reality of the lack of food in the jungle hit some of the contestants harder than others this week. Ex professional footballer Ian Wright in particular struggled with the daily rations of rice and beans and became heated with his fellow campmates when hunger levels were high.
Other highlights of the first week of the series include Roman Kemp’s impressions, Jacqueline’s excitement at sharing the experience with a Kardashian (we all feel you there) and comedian Andrew Maxwell’s near-death experience when he choked on camel meat.
With two new contestants now in the jungle (Coronation street actor Andy Whyment and EastEnders actor Cliff Parisi), what will next week’s episode’s have in store?
