After years of begging, we have finally been blessed with MTV’s hit show Catfish… in the UK! THIS IS NOT A DRILL! It FINALLY hit our screens on the 21st April, and we lapped. It. Up. The UK edition of the show is hosted by Julie Adenuga and Oobah Butler, and here’s what you need to know about Catfish UK.
What is Catfish?
For those who have been living under a rock, Catfish is an MTV reality show based in the USA. Hosted by Nev Schulman and Max Joseph (and then Kamie Crawford) the series follows the truths and lies of online dating.
It is based on Nev’s own experiences which formed the 2010 film Catfish. In the movie, Nev builds a romantic relationship with a woman on Facebook. The woman is supposedly the half-sister of a little girl who sends Nev a painting she did of one of his pictures. The sister, Megan, sends Nev MP3 covers of songs for him, and they talk regularly. Later, Nev and the crew unfurl this and show that most of this is false.
Inspired by the film, Nev went on to help people up and down the USA to help people who are also being lied to or led on by people online. It has been going on for 8 seasons now, and is the reason the term ‘catfish’ began!
Who are the hosts?
Oobah Butler, aged 29, is an author, journalist and filmmaker. He’s perhaps best known for creating a fictional restaurant called The Shed at Dulwich, which somehow got to the top-rated venue in London on Trip Advisor.
Alternatively, Julie Adenuga, 32, is a broadcaster, radio host and the creator of Don’t Trust The Internet, a YouTube channel with 12.8k subscribers.
Where can you watch Catfish UK?
The show aired at 9pm on the 21st April, on MTV UK. We have four more hour-long episodes coming our way, and we cannot wait!
What can we expect from the show?
As with the US version, the hosts will travel up and down the country in attempts to tell fantasy from reality when it comes to our love lives.
The first episode sees Julie and Oobah visit Brighton to meet a woman called Emma, who wants to track down Harlin. The two have been chatting online for a year after meeting on a dating app. They have had a video call, and he has told Emma he loves her. But, since he’s conveniently in the navy, he is hard to pin down.
Recently, Emma has been speaking to her boo less and less, and is starting to worry and get suspicious. This is when our knights in shining camera gear come to the rescue!
