Accommodation

When deciding on accommodation there are two main options most students choose between, which are university-managed accommodation and private student accommodation. Some students that live closeby to the university already may be lucky enough to commute.

At the University of Sussex, there are nine different university-managed accommodation buildings, which either have ensuite rooms in their flats or shared bathrooms. These rooms also range in price and location so when deciding which is best for you it is important to look at them all to compare.

To get in touch with the housing team at the University of Sussex you can email them at housing@sussex.ac.uk or call them on 01273 678220.

Childcare

The University of Sussex understands that many of their staff and students have children, which is why they have a modern nursery on campus that looks after children from three months old to five years old. The nursery is run by The Co-Operative Childcare and is open from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm Monday to Friday. When your child is at nursery the staff will sort all meals, formula milk, creams, wipes and nappies.

There is a £75 registration fee when your child starts at the nursery, and the fees are based on how old the child is. If your child is 0-3 years old it will cost £31.25 for a half-day, £60.50 for a full day, or £289.75 for a full week. If your child is 3-5 it will cost £28.25 for a half-day, £53.25 for a full day, or £255 for a full week. However, if you are a student you get a 20% discount on those prices. A half-day lasts from 7:30 am to 1 pm or 1 pm to 6:30 am.

To get in touch with the nursery you can email them at sussexuniversitynursery@ccc.coop or call them on (01273) 678356.

Disability and Dyslexia

If you have a disability, learning difficulty or mental health condition you can access support services at The University of Sussex. The support unit has a range of mentors, workers, tutors and note-takers available to offer you guidance and support during your time at university. You could also apply for reasonable adjustments to your course or apply for a disabled students allowance which could help you get specialist equipment as well as other support.

To get in touch with the disability support team you can email them at disabilitysupport@sussex.ac.uk or call them on 01273 877466.

Faith & Spirituality

The University of Sussex has a multi-faith chaplaincy to support students of all faiths or none at all. They are there to offer support and advice on all matters, not just those relating to faith. The chaplaincy also organises regular events for students and staff to relax and de-stress, such as through meditation sessions.

Fees and Finance

Starting university can have a huge impact on your bank account, as you suddenly have to face all this financial responsibility for the first time. Students are expected to pay tuition fees, accommodation fees, living costs, travel, supplies, etc. which can feel like a lot. This financial stress is why most students apply for a student loan, which will cover their tuition fees as well as most of their living costs. If you would like some financial advice from the University of Sussex you can call their student finance team or 01273 876767.

If during your studies you find yourself in financial difficulty you can get in touch with the hardship funding team who can help you make arrangements to secure emergency loans and other necessary financial support. To get in touch with the hardship team you can email them at hardship@sussex.ac.uk or call them on 01273 872994.

The University of Sussex also has a range of scholarships and bursaries available for students, including for Sussex students that have reached a National level in a sport. To get in touch with the scholarships department you can email them at scholarships@sussex.ac.uk or call them on 01273 873809.

Health

It’s really important that students register with a doctor when they start at the University of Sussex, as if you become ill you can’t see a doctor unless you are registered. The university even has its own on-campus NHS health centre, so it’s easier than ever to see a doctor when you are ill.

Students should also register with a local dentist, and the university even has a dental practice on campus to make it more convenient for students.

To contact the health centre you can call them on 01273 249049 Monday to Friday, and to get in touch with the on-campus dentist you can call them on 01273 605555.

International Students

The University of Sussex has staff and students from over 140 countries, all of whom they support from the application process as well as during their time at the university. This includes support with visa applications, working in the UK, and how to settle into life in Sussex.

The university also has a service that offers free English language workshops, tutorials, and writing sessions to international students to help them improve their English and academic writing.

To contact the International Student Support Team you can email them at international.support@sussex.ac.uk  or call them on 01273 678422.

Student complaints and academic appeals

Although your time at university should be amazing, and for most students, it is one of the best times of their lives, sometimes things can go wrong and students wish to make a complaint. This may be a complaint about teaching, facilities, or one of the university’s services.

To get in touch with the complaints team at the University of Sussex, you can email them at complaints@sussex.ac.uk.

If you receive an academic outcome that you think is wrong or unfair, you can make an academic appeal. You can also make an academic appeal about student progress committees, academic misconduct committees, partner institutions, etc. by filling in an online form. But you can not appeal against how your work is marked, academic judgement or feedback.

To get in touch with the appeals team at the University of Sussex by emailing them at appeals@sussex.ac.uk.

Volunteering

Everyone should volunteer, and at the University of Sussex, there are plenty of ways to volunteer. Students should take up some of these opportunities, as volunteering can help you boost your CV, learn new skills and help a good cause, such as the local community. The university also has a mentoring scheme you can get involved with, or you could even become a summer buddy and help students taking part in the university summer school.

If you want some more information about volunteering at the University of Sussex you can email them at information@sussex.ac.uk or call them on 01273 606755

Wellbeing

It’s important to look after your mental and physical health whilst your at university, as although studying may seem like the most important thing, it is more important to look after yourself. The university wellbeing team are available to offer advice and support on anything that may be negatively affecting your time at university.

To get in touch with the university wellbeing team you can email them on healthandwellbeing@sussex.ac.uk.
