Many universities are holding offer holder and applicant days, which allow you to take another, more in-depth look at where you may be studying for the next 3-4, or even more, years. And, because of the end of covid restrictions, these offer holder events will be in person, meaning that you’re actually able to see and get a sense of your potential future home. This will hopefully help you narrow down your university choices. So, if you’re looking for some advice on how to make the most of these days, we thought we’d share some of our tips on how to make the most of offer holder and applicant days at uni.
Ask as many specific questions as possible about the course
This first point goes without saying. At the event, there will be professors from your course available to answer any questions you may have. Whether it’s about class sizes, the number of contact hours, questions about specific modules or anything else, someone should be able to answer your question. This will likely be your last opportunity to speak to an academic before you make your decision, so coming with as many specific questions as possible will help you to make as informed of a decision as you can.
Look around at the accommodation
One of the most important things you can do during offer holder and applicant days at uni is to look around the accommodation. If you’re thinking of moving into student halls, you should make a list of at least 5 halls you would like and visit them during your time at the event. There will be some showrooms that allow you to see inside, but even if you’re not able to see inside every hall, just having a walk around or getting to see it in person will help you to decide whether it’s somewhere you could see yourself staying in during your time at uni. Talk to other offer holders
If you can, and feel up to it, introduce yourself to some of the other offer holders at the event. You may be studying with them in September. If nothing else, you meet some new people. Talking to other people at offer holder events may answer some of the questions that you have or even give you new ideas to consider when making your decision.
Have a look around the local area
If you have time, going to have a look around the local area is a good thing to do. This is particularly important if the uni is in or near a city, as this is where you’ll go on your nights out or to study in coffee shops or any other activities. Have a walk around and take in the city. You’ll be spending a lot of time here for the next few years, so getting to check out the area around your uni will help to give you a more complete picture of what life may be like at that uni. Wander Around
Likewise, if you’re looking at a campus uni then be make sure that you have a wander around the campus, outside of a guided tour. Go to a coffee shop (trust me, you won’t be spoilt for choice, uni campuses are full of them) and soak in the atmosphere. The campus will be where you spend a lot of time while you’re at uni, so taking in as much of the atmosphere will help you to make the decision.
Offer holder and applicant days at uni are so important. Doing as much as you can to try and find that gut feeling of “I want to go here” will make that decision so much easier. It’s not an easy decision, but if you have that gut feeling about your visit, then trust it. Who knows where it could lead you!
