The last few months have given us some brilliant series like Tiger King and Sex Education but once you’ve watched them, what else is there? There’s a few brilliant series coming out over the next month but there’s also a whole load of series you’ve probably been sleeping on which are worth a binge. Here’s a look at what to watch on Netflix in 2020.

Dead to me

Remember Lindsay from ‘Freaks and Geeks’? This brilliantly funny series explores the relationship between Judy and Jen who meet at a bereavement support group. For something which sounds morbid and sad, the series is both very heartfelt and witty. It has a whole load of recognisable faces like James Marsden, Brandon Scott and Ed Asner plus there’s two series out right now so plenty for you to watch.

This series isn’t just aimed at sports fans, its for anyone who has a dream.

Chewing Gum

This brilliantly fun series written by and starring up and coming powerhouse Michaela Coel is the kind of programme you could binge over a weekend. It explores the tumultuous life of Beyoncé loving Tracey who is desperately trying to get herself a boyfriend. It is absolutely hilarious and despite first coming out in 2015 continues to be very relevant and poignant at times. There are only two short seasons so its definitely one to watch all at once.

A Perfect Crime

If true crime is your thing, this series will be right up your street. Unravel and investigate the unsolved case of the death of politician Detlev Rohwedder. Crime programmes are abundant on Netflix, but this is certainly one to add to your watchlist.

Derry Girls

Not your average high school sitcom! While this series is set during the troubles in Northern Ireland, it is incredibly funny with characters you will grow to love. This series explores Erin and her mates trying to navigate through the highs and lows of teenage life, encapsulating all of what it means to be Irish and young in the 1990s. Full of dark humour and wit, this is a show you’re probably going to be obsessed with as soon as your start watching it.

The Haunting of Bly Manor

Coming 09/10/2020

With Halloween racing round the corner, Netflix is delivering a new series for anyone who likes a little scare. From the same people who made Haunting of Hill House comes a new story set at Bly Manor. The two while connected are stand alone series so you needn’t necessarily have watched Hill House to enjoy this spooky story. The cinematography in this one is looking to be a wonder in of itself and judging from their last series it’s bound to have an exciting narrative with twists and turns.

Unorthodox

This short series is such an important and beautiful watch. Despite only being 4 episodes long, this one will have you feeling so many emotions; fear, sadness, naivete, joy and wonder. Told in both Yiddish and English, this series will teach you about faith, tradition and liberation. Make sure once you have finished it to watch the bonus behind the scenes episode which shows the making of the series and the research into Hasidic Judaism.

While only being four episodes long, this documentary series explores the build up to and subsequent consequences of the Challenger accident, with testimonies from those who worked on the project and witnessed the disaster. A sad but very interesting and important watch.

The End of the F***ing World

Yet another Channel4 original making its way over to Netflix, TEOTFW is somewhat of a cult favourite. Alyssa and James aren’t your average teenagers and this series follows their antics and adventures in search for understanding of what it really means to feel ‘alive’. Full of dark comedy, wit and brilliantly foul language, this short series is perfect for if you need something which will both make you feel things and leave you in hysterics.

Written by the same people as aforementioned ‘The End of The F***ing World’ is the super funny ‘I am Not Okay with This’. Having broken into the big screen in It, Sophia Lillis and Wyatt Oleff bring Charle’s Forsman’s graphic novel about growing up and finding yourself to life. Reminiscent of TEOTFW and similar to Stranger Things, this series is packed full of darker humour and the occasional bit of comedic gore, all the while full of heart and maybe at times even getting you a little emotional. While season 2 looms, this is a short but fun series you have to see next on your watchlist.
