With Omnicron cases rising, we know that booking a trip comes with a lot of questions these days. Which countries can I visit from the UK? Where can I travel without quarantine? And most importantly, where are the cheapest places to travel from the UK, right now?
Well, you’re in luck. The UK government has just announced that it is relaxing the rules on testing for travel to England. The new rules apply to fully vaccinated travellers and come into place on Friday, Jan 7th 2022. From this date, travellers returning to England no longer have to take a pre-departure PCR test. Instead, they need only to take a PCR test on arrival home, and they don’t need to quarantine while awaiting this result.
This is great news! It will help travellers to save money on costly covid tests, while also being able to get back to work straight away.
So, whether you’re planning that girls holiday away, taking a gap year or you’re simply back at university and dreaming of warmer weather; it’s time to get planning. To help you out, we’ve come up with a list of our favourite holiday destinations that you can visit for very little money.
Fancy riding around Lisbon’s historic tram network? Or maybe you’d rather soak up some sun in the beautiful Azores? Portugal is a fantastic year-round destination. It has blue skies and temperatures hovering around the 15 C mark in January and February. You can also bag cheap flights to Portugal from the UK, with airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet. Plus, travelling in the winter months means that accommodation is usually incredibly cheap. If travelling to Portugal from the UK, you don’t need to quarantine. Simply book a pre-departure PCR or antigen test within 48 hours of your departure. You will also need to complete an online passenger locator form.
Just a three-hour flight away from the UK is the gorgeous Mediterranean island of Malta. The old capital, Valetta, is located right on the coast and it’s one of the dreamiest places in Europe to wander around. Picture yourself having cocktails in ocean-view bars and tucking into fresh seafood with blue skies above. The weather in Malta is around 15 C at the start of the year and there are plenty of cheap flights to be found on Skyscanner. It’s the perfect destination for a girls holiday away or a quick solo stopover.
Alternatively, if you are on a gap year and fancy yourself as a bit of a digital nomad, you can now apply for a digital nomad resistance permit in Malta. Make money while you travel! To enter Malta, you must be fully vaccinated and will need to complete a Public Health Travel Declaration Form and a Passenger Locator Form.
If you are looking for a cheap holiday that you can fit in between work or university then Spain may be the country for you. Beautiful Barcelona is just a 2-hour flight away from the UK and with its beautiful gothic architecture, its delicious food scene, extensive shops and beautiful coastline, it makes for a fantastic winter getaway. What’s more, there are always cheap flights to be found with Ryan Air and Easy Jet. Try booking flights in their winter sales for the best deals.
Alternatively, cities like Madrid, Malaga and Seville also have cheap fights and out of season accommodation. To travel to Spain quarantine-free, you need to be fully vaccinated. You must fill in a Health Control Form but there is no requirement to pay for a covid-19 test- yay!
The Czech Republic
Maybe 2022 is the year to plan that trip to Prague that you’ve dreamt about! The Czech Republic is one of our favourite cheapest places to travel from the UK. The capital, Pague is nicknamed the city of a hundred spires and it’s stunning. Although it’s chilly in the winter months, there are so many cosy cafes, eateries and bars to stay warm in when you need a break from exploring. Prague is also one of Europe’s cheapest destinations, making for a great winter getaway, that won’t break the bank. To travel to the Czech Republic, you need to have been fully vaccinated and take a pre-departure PCR test. If you have received your booster, you do not need to take this PCR test.
You can find flights from the UK to Italy for as little as £9. If you have flexibility around the dates, simply search from your nearest airport to ‘Italy’ on Skyscanner and search across the whole month. Although it’s not beach weather in January and February, sunny skies and fewer crowds mean that it’s a nice time to visit Italy. Just think, you could be tucking into fresh pasta in Rome, rather than huddled up in your cold university accommodation next weekend.
At the time of writing, you can enter Italy from the UK if you’re full vaccinated. You will also need to fill in a Passenger Locator Form and show a negative PCR test 48 hours before departure.
These are some of our favourite cheapest places to travel from the UK right now. As more and more of the world starts to open up: The USA, Thailand and much of South America included 2022 looks set to be the year for that long-awaited trip.
