Who is Daniel?
32-year-old Daniel Kaluuya has been working in the entertainment industry since he was 9 years old when he wrote a script for theatre. He has won a Golden Globe, BAFTA, and a SAG award, and can now officially add an Oscar to the list!
Where’s Daniel Kaluuya from?
Kaluuya was born in London, and was raised near Camden with his older sister.
Where did his career start?
As we mentioned, daniel wrote his first play at age 9. Afterwards, he started improv theatre and appeared in his first credited acting role in 2006 in Shoot The Messenger. He then appeared in Skins, and moved on to be in Silent Witness, Doctor Who, and That Mitchell and Webb Look.
He then went on to play the lead in Sucker Punch at the Royal Court Theatre in London. There, he won reviews of acclaim. These helped score him the role of Tea Leaf in the BBC comedy Psychoville.
Since 2011, he has appeared in Baby, Johnny English Reborn, Black Mirror, Get Out, Black Panther, Widows, Queen and Slim, and now Judas and the Black Messiah.

Daniel loves grime music
The actor loves his grime! He even gave one of his talent spotter, Holly Hughes, a grime music compilation mixtape for her daughter.
He helped write Channel 4’s Skins
As well as starring in Skins, Daniel also wrote full hour-long episodes for the show! The cast and crew called him a ‘talented writer’ and that he was ‘instantly at home’ playing Posh Kenneth.
He dedicated his BAFTA Rising Star Award to his mum
Mumma’s boy in and out, Daniel ended his speech with ‘Mum, you’re the reason why I started; you’re the reason why I’m here and you’re the reason I keep going… thank you for everything.’
Daniel can draw on his own experiences, and did so for Queen & Slim
He was once pulled off of a bus and pinned to the floor in London for fitting the description of someone the police were looking for. So in Queen & Slim, when his character is on the run from the local police following an encounter with racial profiling.
He is ‘a product of arts funding’
In his BAFTA speech, Daniel mentioned this. He got into acting through an after school club that his mum put him in to keep him out of trouble.
He was told that acting wouldn’t work out
When he told his mum at 16 that he wanted to be an actor, she got stressed at the idea of him struggling for work and took him to the government organisation Connexions. There, a woman told him that acting wouldn’t work out for him. Wrong, wrong and wrong again!
He looked up to Skepta
Daniel told Elle that he looked up to grime musicians like Skepta and JME, because they were people from his ‘ends’ that proved success was possible.
