Over the last few months, we have heard all about having a ‘hot girl summer’, but what does ‘hot girl summer’ mean? And can we have one? Coined by Megan Thee Stallion, ‘Hot Girl Summer’ points towards individuals living their very best life. This can mean indulging themselves in self-care and biting the bullet whilst doing things they would usually shy away from. Megan herself defines it as ‘just having a [good] time, hyping up your friends, doing you, not giving a damn about what nobody got to say about it’.

Given the events of the past twelve months, we think it is fair to say that everybody deserves a Hot Girl Summer this year! This doesn’t have to be partying till the early hours but can be activities that make you feel fulfilled. In this article, we will go through the ways you can achieve this: things to do and places to put your energy!

Hang out with your loved ones

These are the people who make us feel whole, who we come away from feeling a little brighter and more appreciative. Spend time with your friends and family, away from the digital world and live in the moment! Why not go museum hopping or try out new swanky bars? Alternatively, head out for a picnic or watch movies in the comfort of your own home. However, you prefer to spend time with your people do it wholeheartedly and without distraction.

Try a New Style

Unless you have deviated from the lockdown, it is likely that many of the looks in your wardrobe have been left untouched for quite some time. Now is the occasion to rummage through your collections and try some new looks. Wear what makes you feel powerful and confident. Trying a new style doesn’t have to be limited to your clothing choice but can also be a shift in your hairstyle, makeup or general look. Give it a go, and if you don’t like the ‘new you’, at least you have tried it!

Practice self-love

I am beautiful. I am strong. I am intelligent. These affirmations may seem corny at first glance but said every day, standing in front of a mirror could truly change the way you look at yourself. Beauty standards are unattainable, and in today’s toxic world, it is even more imperative that we give ourselves some love and appreciation. Ultimately self-love is all about balance. Eat healthy foods and lots of chocolate (in moderation of course), exercise but also spend a couple of evenings slouched on the sofa watching rom coms. Treat your body nicely, and it will repay you.

Say ‘Yes’ to more

Instead of shying away or saying ‘I can’t be bothered’ why not give new things a go? Maybe you’ve heard kayaking was quite fun and want to try rock-climbing? If you are feeling really brave, why not bite the bullet and go bungee jumping. Even if you hate the experience and would never do it again, it is a story to tell, it is something you have pushed yourself to achieve. These adventures don’t have to cost a lot of money (check out the article titled ‘Boredom to Fun: 50 fun activities for a cheap day out’); explore woodlands, go rock pooling, or visit local beaches. Make a summer bucket list and check your adventures off as you go.

Take Time Off

Although Hot Girl Summer is exciting and adventurous, it can also be relaxing. The 21st century is fast-paced and unrelenting. We live in a world where the ‘next best thing’ is constantly ticking away in our brain; where am I going tomorrow? When is that deadline? Who am I seeing next week? Why not take some time off this summer? Stick your feet up and read that book that has been left lying around. Why not have a digital-free day, go for a walk or just relax in your own company without the artificial glare of your phone inciting headaches. Ensure you give your body the rest it deserves!

However you decide to spend your ‘hot girl summer’, make sure you’re having fun, staying safe and doing it with people you love! Check out other Unifresher articles to inspire places to go, activities to enjoy and other ways you can spice up your summer months!
