Accommodation

One of the main decisions you will need to decide once you have chosen to go to Newman University is deciding where you are going to live. Most students live in either university-managed accommodation or in private student accommodation, but some are lucky enough to already live close to the university and can commute.

However living on campus can help you grow your independence, and for most people student accommodation is their first chance of living away from home. Newman University has a range of accommodation options for their students, and they even had a new university-managed property open up in 2018. To make sure you make the best decision for you it is better to have a look at all their different buildings to compare facilities, prices, shared or ensuite bathrooms, and amount of flatmates.

To get in touch with the accommodation team you can call the accommodation manager on 0121 483 2219 ir email them at accommodation@newman.ac.uk.

Childcare

More and more students are starting their time at university after already starting a family, which means childcare can be a huge area of concern. However, there is an independent nursery within the Newman University campus. Whipper Snappers is a small nursery and only care for 18 children so they do have a waiting list. But the location is ideal for parents wanting to attend their lectures/seminars knowing their child is only around the corner, so as soon as you have a place at Newman University you should add their name to the list.

To contact Whipper Snappers nursery you should call them on 0121 478 3163.

Disability and Dyslexia

At Newman University they want all students to do the best that they can, and to make sure that is possible they have support available for students who have a disability or a learning disorder.

If you have been assessed as having dyslexia you are able to have extra time in exams, extensions in library loans, recording arrangements for teaching, as well as the ‘Red Dot Scheme’. The university also has a dyslexia adviser who can help students apply for a disabled student allowance, which can help pay for specialist equipment. The university also can provide one to one support to students with dyslexia through tutors.

To get in touch with the Dyslexia advisers you can email them at studentsupport@newman.ac.uk.

Faith and Spirituality

Newman University is very accommodating to its students religious and spiritual beliefs and has a chapel, blessed sacrament chapel, and a multi-faith prayer room. There are also some religious societies within the Newman students union, including the Newman Christian Union who meet on Thursdays, and the Islamic Society who meet on Wednesdays.

To get in touch with the chaplaincy you can email them at m.holland@newman.ac.uk or call them on 0121 476 1181.

Fees and Finance

After you accept your place at Newman University, you may be worried about your bank account, which is suddenly responsible for your tuition fees, living costs, accommodation and travel. This can seem like a lot and is the first time most people are financially independent, so to help you manage all this without breaking the bank most students apply for a student loan to cover their tuition and accommodation fees.

If you would like some guidance and support with your finances you can get in touch with the finance team by emailing studentsupport@newman.ac.uk.

Health

Although there are no doctor or dentist clinics on Newman University campus, there are plenty nearby which you can find here. The university also encourages students to let them know of any health conditions they may have, even if they don’t think it will affect their studies. Letting the university know, even if you do not need any assistance, means that if your health should get worse they can help you find specialist equipment, organise extensions to assignments, or adjust examinations.

If you want to get in touch with Newman University about your health you can email them at To get in touch with the wellbeing team you can email them at studentsupport@newman.ac.uk.

International Students

Newman University welcomes students from all over the world and has a special team within their student services to offer them support and guidance on their application, as well as during their studies. The university considers international students in the same way as UK students and asks for them to apply in the same way.

To get in touch with the Newman University international team you can email them at international@newman.ac.uk.

Student Academic Support

During your time at university, you will experience many great moments, from making new friends to getting your first grade back. However sometimes during your studies, you may wish to make a complaint, perhaps about the course, a module, another student or even a member of staff. Or if you receive a result/grade you find unfair or wrong, you can make an academic appeal and request for a review of the grade if you can provide evidence or reasonable grounds that there was bias or extenuating circumstances. Newman University welcomes all feedback, positive or negative, so if you have a complaint or wish to make an academic appeal you can let them know at studentsupport@newman.ac.uk.

Volunteering

A great way to spend your free time is through volunteering, as it’s a great way for students to boost their cv’s, learn new skills and help people. Newman University also has a volunteering programme where you can receive awards depending on hour many hours of volunteering you do, whether it’s 20 or 200.

If you want to get in touch with the careers/volunteering team at Newman University you can call them on 0121 476 1181 or email them at careers@newman.ac.uk.

Newman University provides a range of wellbeing workshops to help students improve their health and wellbeing. The team also provide counselling services, to help with anything that may be negatively affecting a student’s studies.
