How do I choose the right student accommodation?
Start with your budget and preferred location, then compare halls, uni managed options, and private rentals. Check travel times to campus, safety, local amenities, and what is included in the price. Read recent reviews and speak to current students if possible.
What should I check before signing a tenancy?
Confirm the contract length, rent amount and due dates, deposit protection, and any guarantor requirements. Ask who pays which bills, what the repair timescales are, and the process for ending the tenancy early. Always view the property, take photos, and get promises in writing.
How do bills and budgeting work in student housing?
Some accommodation is bills included, others are not. If you split bills, agree who manages each one and set up equal payments. Track spending weekly, use student discounts, and consider energy saving habits to reduce costs. Council tax usually does not apply if everyone is a full time student.
What if there are problems with my landlord or property?
Report issues in writing and keep a record. Give the landlord reasonable time to fix problems, then escalate through the agent or the accommodation provider if needed. Know your rights on deposit protection, repairs, and access, and contact your students’ union advice centre if you need support.
