Sometimes, but it is rarely guaranteed. Most universities we checked let returning students apply for a limited number of rooms, a few are generous, and some, including De Montfort and Anglia Ruskin, tell second years to look elsewhere. Leeds opened its 2027/28 returner applications on 2 November 2026, so check your own university's window now, as some close before you expect.
Can you stay in halls for second year? University by university
From each university's own pages, unless we say otherwise. Most show 2026/27 rules, as 2027/28 details are still coming out, so use this as a guide.
The pattern is clear enough to plan around: first years come first, returners get what is left, and a small group of students get priority because private renting would be harder for them.

Who is most likely to get a returner room?
If you fall into one of these groups, tell the accommodation office straight away and do not assume they know. The groups are not the same everywhere, so read your own university's list. St Andrews warns that being in a priority group still does not guarantee you a room, and it expects you to apply in its normal window.
Everyone else competes for what is left. At Reading it is first come first served, and Leeds warns that popular residences can close early if demand is high. Leeds also says rooms for returners may not be available in every residence, so you may not get your old hall even if you get a room.
Care leavers and estranged students
Named at St Andrews, York and ARU, and at King's as part of its guarantee, as reported by Roar. York places confirmed students in a priority group.
Students with accessibility needs
Leeds, St Andrews and York all make room for students whose needs a private let may not meet. Apply with supporting detail. ARU reserves about 5% of rooms for priority allocation.
International undergraduates
Leeds guarantees an offer to full-fee international undergraduates who apply by the deadline. This is the clearest guarantee we found for this group.
Placement and study abroad returners
York includes students returning from a placement or study abroad. St Andrews lists those studying abroad as a priority group.
Hall leaders and senior residents
St Andrews guarantees named hall committee roles. Imperial's Hall Seniors get an extra year in halls for helping run the hall, generally with £5 a week off rent.
When to apply for halls as a second year
Our old advice said December to February. That is now too narrow.
Published windows run from early November at Leeds to February and March at St Andrews, Surrey and Royal Holloway. Warwick's bookings usually open at the end of Term 1 or the start of Term 2. Dates for 2027/28 may differ from the 2026/27 dates shown here, so use them only as a guide to when to look.
The real trap is that these windows overlap with house hunting. If you wait for a February answer and it is a no, your friends may already have signed for a house. Our rule: find your window in the first half of your first term, then decide your plan B before you apply.
- By the end of NovemberFind your university's returner page and note the opening date and deadline. Ask if it is not published yet.
- As soon as it opensApply early where it is first come first served, as at Reading and Royal Holloway. Follow every deadline, because Reading says they are final.
- While you waitKeep a second option warm. Halls are not guaranteed anywhere on our list, except for specific groups.
- Clear any debtsReading excludes students with halls debt or a halls disciplinary sanction, and King's is reported to block outstanding debts too.
- If you are told noAsk the accommodation team about remaining rooms. Surrey accepts applications all year, though it says term-time availability is very limited.
Should you stay in halls for second year?
Costs are covered in our second year housing guide, so we will not repeat them here. It compares halls, PBSA and private houses city by city. The policy side does change the decision though, so here is how we would use it.
Staying can suit you if you have no group to live with yet, if you need adapted accommodation, or if your course is heavy and you want less admin. Leeds lists rent that includes Wi-Fi and energy, no deposit or guarantor, and no summer rent on shorter contracts. On-campus rooms at Warwick do not need a guarantor either, which matters if you have nobody to ask.
It suits you less if you want to be with friends and your university has few rooms. Remember that new first years will fill most flats, so your flatmates may be in a very different stage of uni life. That is neither good nor bad, but it is worth thinking through.

Second year housing guideBecoming a senior resident or hall senior
A hall role can be the most reliable route back, where your university has one. Names and deals differ. At Imperial, Hall Seniors are a small number of students offered an extra year in halls in return for supporting the running of the hall, including events, getting the hall ready, wellbeing support and budgets. They are generally offered £5 a week off rent, which is £200 over a 40-week year.
At St Andrews, members of a hall's executive committee, such as the Senior Student or Treasurer, are in the returner guarantee group. We would ask your hall team in your first term who does these jobs and how they are chosen. Do not assume a role is paid or comes with a rent cut unless your university says so.
If your university does not offer halls after first year
You still have options. PBSA companies take students in any year, on published rules that ask for student status and not first-year status. Your university's housing team can help too: ARU promises tenancy support, house hunting fairs and resources for second years going private, and York runs student housing drop-in sessions.
Some universities have changed their rules recently. Roar reported in June 2026 that most returning undergraduates at King's could not book King's accommodation for 2026/27 unless approved under its affordable or disability schemes. Roar also quotes King's saying returners have never been guaranteed rooms. If you are depending on a place, check the current year's page and ask for it in writing.

Can you stay in halls for second year?

Possibly, but do not count on it. If your hall matters to you, apply on the first day.

No. Reading says it has over 1,000 returners living in its halls and calls returning a popular choice. Most universities keep rooms for returners for good reasons, including accessibility, study abroad and having no group to live with. Your flatmates may mostly be first years, so think about whether you would enjoy that.
