Sheffield · Student city guide
Two universities a short walk apart, some of the cheapest rents of any big student city, and the Peak District on the edge of town. This is how Sheffield actually works for students: where to live, what it costs and where to go out.

City to the Peaks
Sheffield is compact for a big city. The University of Sheffield runs west from the city centre towards Broomhill, and Sheffield Hallam sits by the station, with a second campus off Ecclesall Road. Here's how the student map fits together.
Bring good shoes: Sheffield is built on seven hills, so most walks involve a climb. Buses and the Supertram cover the gaps, and student singles are £1.80 with your student ID.
1
The Peace Gardens, the Winter Garden, Division Street's bars and Sheffield Hallam's City Campus by the station.
2
The student strip of bars and takeaways, leading up to the University of Sheffield's Students' Union and the Arts Tower.
3
Terraced student houses, cheap cafés and pubs, and the University of Sheffield's student villages just beyond.
4
A long run of bars, brunch spots and gyms, Hallam's Collegiate campus and Endcliffe Park at the top.
5
Old steelworks turned real-ale pubs, food halls and flats, a short walk north of the centre.
“The Peaks are so close by, and visiting them is a great way to have a ramble and relieve some stress.”

Universities
Both universities are close to the centre, so students mix more than in most cities. University of Sheffield students tend to live west of campus, while Hallam students spread across the centre and Ecclesall Road.
Russell Group · Western Bank
A big research university stretching from the city centre to Broomhill, home to the Arts Tower and one of the UK's best-known students' unions. First-years mostly live in the Endcliffe and Ranmoor student villages.
City Campus · Collegiate
One of the UK's largest universities, with its City Campus next to the railway station and Collegiate Campus off Ecclesall Road. It's strong in health, sport, engineering and creative subjects.

FAQs
Is Sheffield a good city for students?
For most people, yes. It has two big universities close to the centre, rents that are lower than many big student cities, a friendly feel and the Peak District on the doorstep. The main trade-off is the hills.
Which area of Sheffield is best for students?
It depends on your university. University of Sheffield students usually live in Broomhill, Crookes or Walkley after first year. Sheffield Hallam students often choose the city centre, Sharrow or streets off Ecclesall Road. Most first-years at both universities start in halls.
How much is student rent in Sheffield?
Rooms in shared houses in areas such as Crookes and Walkley often cost about £85–£110 a week in 2026/27, while purpose-built rooms and studios in the city centre usually cost more, often with bills included.
Is Sheffield safe for students?
Most students feel safe, and Sheffield is often seen as one of the friendlier big cities. Burglary and bike theft do happen in student areas, so lock up properly, keep valuables out of sight and use busy, well-lit routes or licensed taxis late at night.
How do students get around Sheffield?
Mostly on foot, by bus and by Supertram. A student bus single is £1.80 when you show your student ID, and weekly and termly student tickets are available. Trains from Sheffield station reach Manchester and Leeds in about an hour.
What is Sheffield famous for?
Steel and cutlery, Henderson's Relish, the Arctic Monkeys and Pulp, the Crucible and the World Snooker Championship, and being the UK's Outdoor City, with a third of it inside the Peak District National Park.
