The podium

The three universities whose students consistently report the highest levels of overall happiness with their university experience.

Happiest university cities (avg. score)

League tables rank universities on research output. This ranking ranks them on what students actually report. The happiest universities are the ones that get the day-to-day experience right — not just the headline metrics.

We ranked 124 UK universities using student satisfaction as the primary driver, weighted alongside sustainability, safety and cost of living. All data is from verifiable sources and fully transparent below.

Our rankings are powered by a wide mix of voices and data sources:

  • Homepage nominations from our annual Unifresher users
  • Social polls from 20,000+ Instagram and TikTok followers
  • Expert input from specialists relevant to each category

That means our awards reflect what real students care about, not just what sounds good in a brochure.

Common questions

How we rank

What goes into the score

Every metric is normalised to 0-100 before weighting. No data is hidden.

55%
Student Satisfaction
Data from the National Student Survey — the most direct measure of how happy students are with their overall university experience. As the primary metric for this ranking, it carries the majority of the weighting.
20%
Sustainability Score
Universities that invest in sustainability tend to create campus environments students feel good about being part of. The correlation between sustainability investment and student happiness is consistent across our data.
15%
Safety Index
City-level crime data. Feeling safe where you live is a prerequisite for being happy there. Safety contributes meaningfully to overall student wellbeing and is built into this ranking accordingly.
10%
Cost of Living
Inverted: cheaper cities score higher. Financial stress is one of the most consistent predictors of poor student wellbeing. A more affordable city gives students more breathing room — and that shows up in satisfaction scores.
