Most expensive university cities (avg. score)

The most expensive universities in the UK are not necessarily the best ones. Cost of living in student cities varies enormously — and for many students, the gap between their maintenance loan and their actual costs is where financial stress begins. This ranking names that cost directly.

We ranked 124 UK universities using cost of living index as the primary driver — higher cost scores higher — alongside graduate earnings, satisfaction and safety. This is the only ranking that tells you where your money will go furthest in the wrong direction.

How we rank

What goes into the score

Every metric is normalised to 0-100 before weighting. No data is hidden.

60%
Cost of Living Index
Higher cost scores higher. Covers accommodation, transport, food and day-to-day essentials in each university city. The single biggest variable in how much studying at a particular university will actually cost you.
20%
Graduate Earnings
HESA data. A higher-cost university is more justifiable if it produces significantly better-paid graduates. This metric contextualises the cost — a university that is expensive but also delivers strong earnings is a different proposition to one that is expensive and does not.
15%
Student Satisfaction
From the National Student Survey. Are students at expensive universities actually happier? The data lets you judge whether the higher cost is reflected in a better experience.
5%
Safety Index
City-level crime data. Expensive cities are not automatically safer. This metric captures whether the higher cost comes with a safer environment — or not.
