What does this result suggest?

The largest single group felt fairly confident, but the overall picture was mixed, with uncertainty and avoidance also featuring strongly.

Fair confidence led the poll

Eight respondents selected fairly confident, making it the largest single answer at 40%.

Very high confidence was uncommon

Only one respondent selected very confident, equivalent to 5% of the sample.

Uncertainty remained visible

Five respondents were not very confident and six said they try not to think about their career prospects after graduation.

Why this result matters

Career confidence can shape how students approach applications, work experience and the transition out of university, so the spread of answers is useful even though this is a small indicative poll.

Fairly confident being the most selected answer suggests that some respondents feel positive about their prospects without feeling completely certain. That distinction matters because career confidence is rarely all-or-nothing: students may believe they can find suitable work while still feeling unsure about competition, timing, salary or the route into their preferred field.

Only one respondent selected very confident. In this sample, strong certainty about post-graduation prospects was therefore much less common than moderate confidence. That could reflect how difficult it is to predict the graduate job market before someone has completed their degree, built experience or begun applying.

The 30% who selected “I try not to think about it” are particularly interesting, but that answer should not automatically be interpreted as low confidence. It may reflect avoidance, uncertainty, competing priorities or simply a preference not to focus on life after university yet. A follow-up question would be needed to understand the reason behind that response.

Because this was an indicative Instagram poll of 20 respondents, it should be treated as a snapshot of this audience rather than evidence of career confidence among all UK students. A larger study could compare confidence by year of study, subject, work experience, application activity and whether respondents already have a graduate job or placement lined up.
