Key takeaways

  • UniMate is a free app that helps calculate your university grades
  • Allows manual input of modules and marks or year averages
  • Features include tracking grades and setting assignment deadlines

Whether you’re in your first year of your undergrad or in the final year of your PhD, it’s useful to be able to work out how you’re getting on in class. With different modules, figuring out your grades can be tricky, as they have different weights and contribute differently to your overall degree classification. If numbers aren’t your thing or you can’t face trying to calculate them on your own, we’ve found a few ways to make calculating your grades easier!

Apps

UniGrade

UniGrade is a popular option for calculating grades, and for good reason! The interface is pretty easy to understand and has most things you need to keep organised. The main page has your average grade %, your completed % of grades and your goals. These goals show what you need to average to achieve your desired grades! On the app, you can add each year of your degree and your modules, customising their names and credits. These will show your yearly average and what % you have completed so far, based on how you do on each assignment.

What we really like about this app is that it prioritises students! They’re currently working on adding a widget, so Apple users can see their progress right on their home screen. The creators also have an Instagram page, so you can keep track of any app updates and contact them if you have any ideas for improvement.

Grademy

Grademy is definitely one of the easier apps to use, so it’s great if you’re looking for something simple to break down your grades. There’s one page on the app where you can add your marks, the assessment type and its weight (in %). You can add all of your modules and assignments, and then calculate your grade at any time. Grademy will give you an overall percentage, so you can directly see where you’re at!

However, whilst this app is free and easy to use, it does not come with any other benefits. So, if you’re looking for something more organisational, it may not be right for you.

Notan

Notan is a good app for keeping track of your grades all in one spot. We found it easy to use, and even enjoyed the memes you get when you add a grade! There are a variety of templates; we chose simple, and found this a good option. On your interface, you can change the grading system for your modules, the number of terms, and what the mark scheme is. Then, you can add your modules and individual assignment grades, which will then have an average across the module, term and an overall summary.

However, our only complaint is that this app uses AI to generate these results. This means that, as the app states, there is no guarantee that the grade calculations are correct. When checking them against a calculator, we did find the averages to be accurate! Ultimately, it is your decision as a user whether this suits you or not. Regardless of this, users have rated the app highly on the App Store.

Grade Calculator

Grade Calculator is a good option for Android users looking for an easy-to-use grade calculator. This app helps calculate your grades by generating an average result across your assignments. Just add your modules and your results for each assessment. You can also add notes to each module and get averages across individual assignments. This option is great because it gets back to the basics, giving you an average grade whilst letting you see your marks all in one handy interface.

Grades

Another convenient option, Grades, is a good app for organising your classes. What is helpful about this app is that it personalises your platform based on your course and your goals. The only difficulty we’ve found is that it is primarily based on GPA, which UK universities do not tend to use. However, you can edit the numerical grades on the scale, so it is very easy to match them to the UK mark scheme!

What we really like about this app is that it is very customisable. You can add your modules and classes, and organise them with different names, colours and icons to match. Also, you can add their grading type and how many credits they’re worth. For each class, you can even add assignments individually. If you need something to break down your modules visually, this app is a great option. What’s more, you can add your current grade and target grade, and the app will tell you what grades you need to hit your goal!

However, many of the add-ons must be purchased through their membership, which is £9.99/year. You can still create a free account to keep your grades, but it means students must pay to include things like customisable themes, group projects and unlimited classes. This means that it might not be right for you if you like free rein over your organising. The app itself, however, is still rated highly by users!

Grade Pal

Grade Pal has a simple yet convenient interface for organising and calculating your grades. You can add your courses, personalising their title and colour. You can even add your instructor’s name! In each module, you can add your assignments, what they are marked out of and the grade you got. Then, it will give you a current average, which you can compare to your goal grade.

Furthermore, there is a handy grade calculator, so you can see what would happen to your grade depending on your future results. It makes setting goals and working on future assignments a lot less stressful! We recommend this app if you’re looking for something quick and easy, and many other students rate it highly on the app stores.

Gradient

Gradient is one of our personal favourites! It is incredibly easy to use and lays out a lot of useful information for students. You can sign up to save your data, or just use it as a guest. What’s more, you can share it with course mates, and share information such as grades, upcoming assignments, and more!

On the app, your interface shows your courses, performance, upcoming and overdue assignments. For courses, you get to personalise the info, its colour and icon, and add the grading scheme, including the categories for assessments you will have. Unlike most other apps, there is an assignments page to keep track of your deadlines. You can get notifications daily or weekly for upcoming assessments, which is great if you’re the kind of person to leave them till the last minute! Finally, there is an analytics page that breaks down your current performance across modules.

If you’re someone who likes understanding the analytics of your grades, then there is even a premium option! From £1.67/month, you can have access to setting goals, calculating possible future grades, and seeing how your performance changes across the year. We found that you do not need these for the app to be helpful, but they are definitely great bonuses if you are focused on sticking to your target grades!

Websites

The Calculator Site

You don’t have to download an app to check your progress at your university! There are plenty of websites out there for you to use, and this is one that we recommend. This website has a dedicated University Grade Calculator, where you can filter for assignments, modules or years to calculate your grade. Then you input your mark and its weight, in % or credits. (You can even customise the names of your modules if you like!) You can add as many as you like, and there’s even the optional choice to add your target grade.

The website breaks down how it calculates your grade, so the information is readily available and easy to understand. There’s even a performance chart for you to compare your progress across your grades! The results are broken down into your average mark across your results and what you need on average to reach your target. We found it really convenient to use, and great for checking where you are at without having to download an app.

UK Calculator

This University Grade Calculator is another convenient option for students. Simply enter your marks for each module and their credit weightings to calculate your average and degree classification. This option is good for students looking to calculate their final degree grade, whether you’re an undergrad or postgrad student.

Similar to the other website, this one also breaks down all the information you need on grade weightings, calculating your grades and how degrees are classed. This makes understanding your grades a lot easier!
