Jonathan Romesh Ranganathan was born in Crawley in 1978 to Sri Lankan Tamil parents, Ranga and Sivashantini Ranganathan. He was raised Hindu. Initially, he had a fairly privileged childhood. However, that all changed when his father was arrested and went to prison for fraud. His family became bankrupt and homeless, forcing Romesh to swap his private school for a council estate. He experienced some bullying, which he attributes to being “very overweight”. But he found solace in hip-hop music.

Before becoming a comedian, he worked as a maths teacher at Hazelwick school.

His career

At the start of his career as a comic, he balanced teaching and evening gigs. His big break came from the “So You Think You’re Funny” competition in Edinburgh. In 2015, Romesh landed his breakthrough TV job on a BBC3 series called “Asian Provocateur”, where he travelled to Sri Lanka to connect with his culture and roots.

He later joined panel shows, such as Mock the Week and A League of Their Own, where he became a regular. His travel documentary series, The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan, won him a BAFTA.

In late 2025, he made his West End stage debut in Alan Ayckbourn’s “Woman in Mind”. He toured this show across the UK in March 2026. Currently, he hosts The Weakest Link and is the host of BBC Radio 2’s lunchtime Saturday radio show.
