Overview

Is the University of Sheffield right for you?

Sheffield is a big Russell Group university in a city that feels smaller and friendlier than its size suggests. The campus spreads along Western Bank and into the city centre, and most first years live either in the leafy Ranmoor & Endcliffe 'student village' or in city-centre halls a few minutes from lectures. The students' union is the social hub and has a long run of national awards behind it.

It's hilly, so expect some steep walks. Halls aren't cheap (most rooms are around £150–£230 a week), but private renting is more affordable than in many big cities, and the Peak District is a short bus ride away.

You’ll love it if…

  • You want a big-university choice of courses and societies in a friendly, manageable city
  • A lively, award-winning students' union matters to you
  • You like walking, climbing or running and want the Peak District on your doorstep
  • You want a choice between a green student village and city-centre living
  • You want a Russell Group university without big-city London or Manchester prices for private rents

Think twice if…

  • You hate hills: Sheffield is a very hilly city and the walk up to campus and Endcliffe from the centre is steep
  • You're on a tight budget for first year: the cheapest hall room is about £151 a week, and en-suites are around £180–£200
  • You want to walk out of halls straight into lectures from Endcliffe: the university puts the walk to campus at around 25 minutes
  • You want catered halls: there's only one catered option (Stephenson)
  • You want a huge, round-the-clock metropolis: Sheffield's nightlife is good but more student-focused than Manchester's or London's
