Overview

Is the University of Warwick right for you?

Warwick is a big campus university on the southern edge of Coventry, about three miles from the city centre. The name confuses a lot of people: it's not in the town of Warwick. First years live on campus, in halls a walk from lectures, the Students' Union, the sports centre and Warwick Arts Centre.

After first year, most students move to Leamington Spa, Kenilworth or Coventry and travel in by bus. It's a Russell Group university with around 28,000 students, a hard-working reputation and lots of societies. Campus rooms start at £128 a week for 2026/27, but en-suites cost £189–£255.

You’ll love it if…

  • You want a self-contained campus where everything is a short walk away
  • You like the idea of a Russell Group university with a strong reputation in economics, maths and business
  • You'd enjoy theatre, film and music at a big arts centre on campus
  • You want countryside nearby but a city (Coventry) and towns (Leamington, Kenilworth) within reach
  • You're happy to move off campus and take the bus in from second year

Think twice if…

  • You want to live in a big-city centre: campus is about three miles out of Coventry
  • You're on a tight budget: most campus en-suite rooms cost over £200 a week
  • You don't want a commute later on. Most students live in Leamington, Kenilworth or Coventry from second year
  • You'd find a campus 'bubble' too limiting for a whole first year
  • You want a guaranteed en-suite: around a third of campus rooms share bathrooms

Known for

  • Despite the name, the campus is in Coventry, about three miles from the city centre and on the border with Warwickshire, not in the town of Warwick
  • A Russell Group university founded only in 1965, which has quickly built a strong reputation, especially in economics, maths and business
  • Warwick Arts Centre, one of the largest arts centres in the UK, right on campus
  • A big, self-contained campus where first years live, study and socialise in one place

Popular student areas for second and third year

Leamington Spa

The classic Warwick second-year town: Regency streets, lots of student houses, bars and nights out. A bus ride from campus.

Kenilworth

A smaller, quieter and leafier town close to campus.

Coventry (Canley, Earlsdon, Tile Hill)

Closest to campus and often cheaper, with easy buses. Earlsdon has good pubs and cafés.

Top tip

Apply online before 18 August. Applying earlier doesn't improve your chances, because everyone who meets the conditions goes into the same ballot. You pick seven preferences. Around 65% of campus rooms are en-suite and demand for them is high, so only list shared-bathroom halls you'd be happy with. Anyone not placed on campus gets a room with a partnership provider off campus. For later years, the university points students to Warwick Studentpad.

Money

How much it costs to study at the University of Warwick

Campus rents for 2026/27 run from £128 a week (Rootes) to £255 (Bluebell), and around two-thirds of campus rooms are en-suite at £189 or more. All campus halls are self-catered, so budget for food too. The university's living-costs page doesn't publish a weekly estimate; it points students to its online budget calculator instead. Coventry and Leamington rents are generally lower than in the South East.
