Best cities for student social life (avg. score)

Social life at university is not just about going out. It is about whether students are genuinely engaged with each other, whether the city around them supports a varied and accessible social scene, and whether they can afford to participate. The universities that score highest here are the ones where social life is a real part of the experience, not an afterthought.

We ranked 124 UK universities using social life score as the primary driver, supported by student satisfaction, pub density and cost of living. Social life is student-reported — it reflects what students actually experience, not just what a city looks like on a map.

How we rank

What goes into the score

Every metric is normalised to 0-100 before weighting. No data is hidden.

45%
Social Life Score
Student-reported data on how active and engaged student social life is at each university. This is the core metric — it captures the actual experience of students there, not the theoretical potential of the city around them.
25%
Student Satisfaction
From the National Student Survey. Students who are satisfied with their overall experience are far more likely to be socially engaged. Satisfaction and social connection are closely linked — isolated or unhappy students report lower social life scores regardless of their city.
20%
Pub Density
Pubs per square mile in the university city. A consistent proxy for the physical social infrastructure available to students — venues to meet, socialise and build community beyond the campus itself.
10%
Cost of Living
Inverted: cheaper cities score higher. Social life costs money. Students in more affordable cities can afford to go out more, join more societies, and participate in the social scene without the financial anxiety that shuts social engagement down.
