The podium

The three universities that scored highest for both career outcomes and quality of student experience.

Best cities for work-life balance (avg. score)

Some universities produce great graduates but miserable students. Others create a fantastic social environment but weak career outcomes. Work-life balance is about finding the universities that do both. The data shows they exist — and they are not always the ones you expect.

We ranked 124 UK universities across four metrics: graduate earnings, student satisfaction, social life and cost of living. The weighting reflects the balance — career outcomes and lived experience contribute equally, with affordability as the third factor that determines whether that balance is actually sustainable.

How we rank

What goes into the score

Every metric is normalised to 0-100 before weighting. No data is hidden.

35%
Graduate Earnings
HESA data — average salary 15 months after graduation. The work side of the equation. A degree that does not help your career is not delivering balance, it is just delivering social life at significant cost.
30%
Student Satisfaction
From the National Student Survey. The life side of the equation. Students who are satisfied are students who are genuinely enjoying the experience — not just tolerating it in pursuit of a certificate.
20%
Social Life Score
Student-reported social engagement. Balance requires an actual social life, not just the theoretical possibility of one. Universities where students are actively engaged outside their studies score higher here.
15%
Cost of Living
Inverted: cheaper cities score higher. Financial pressure is the enemy of balance. Students who are constantly stressed about money cannot enjoy their social life or engage fully with their studies. Affordability enables everything else.
