What the ranking tells you about studying international relations

International relations is one of the most popular politics-adjacent degrees in the UK, offered at 71 universities. The variation in research depth, geopolitical specialism, language requirements, study abroad pathways and graduate outcomes across those 71 institutions is significant. This ranking scores all 71 on eight consistent metrics β€” giving you comparative course delivery data that most IR applicant guidance overlooks.

Β£35k

University of Hertfordshire β€” 100% on both course delivery metrics

LSE at 22nd: Β£35,000 β€” the highest IR graduate earnings in the UK

London School of Economics ranks 22nd in this field with 129 points and produces international relations graduates earning Β£35,000 β€” the highest in this ranking by Β£1,000 above the next-highest (University of Bath at Β£34,000). LSE's IR department is internationally one of the most prestigious in the world, with particular strengths in international political economy, global governance, security studies and international law. It ranks 22nd because London's maximum cost of living score suppresses its overall position significantly, alongside the lowest student satisfaction in the field at 69%. LSE's course delivery of 96% teaching quality and 91% academic support are strong. For students targeting careers in international organisations, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, major NGOs, international finance, think tanks or global consultancy, LSE's IR earnings premium and employer network carry weight that this ranking does not fully capture.

University of Hertfordshire at joint 16th: 100% on both metrics

University of Hertfordshire ranks joint 16th with 136 points and achieves 100% on both teaching quality and academic support β€” the strongest course delivery double in this field. Hertfordshire produces graduates earning Β£29,000 β€” above the field average. Its joint 16th position reflects Hertfordshire's relatively low sustainability index and social life scores. For students who want the best-measured course delivery in this subject, Hertfordshire's data is the most compelling in the entire field.

University of Bath at joint 16th: Β£34,000 β€” the second-highest IR earnings. Bath ranks joint 16th with 136 points and achieves 94% academic support and 95% teaching quality alongside Β£34,000 graduate earnings. Bath's IR programme sits within a strong social science faculty and benefits from language study integration and strong placement infrastructure in international business and government. Both Bath and LSE produce IR graduates into premium career pathways β€” Bath from a position that avoids London's cost penalty. Bath at joint 16th with Β£34,000 versus LSE at 22nd with Β£35,000 is one of the most direct value comparisons in this ranking series.

Exeter at 9th: academic support anomaly in the top 10

University of Exeter ranks 9th with 147 points and achieves 86% teaching quality β€” solid β€” but only 78% academic support, which is the joint-lowest in the top 20 alongside SOAS (34th). The field average academic support is approximately 91%. Exeter's IR department is research-active and particularly strong in European politics, security studies and international development. Its 78% academic support is a specific figure worth querying at open day for students who value structured one-to-one academic guidance alongside research-led seminars.

International relations degrees: your questions answered

Swansea University is the best university for international relations in the UK according to the 2027 Unifresher Rankings, scoring 168 points. Durham is second. University of Hertfordshire (joint 16th) achieves 100% on both course delivery metrics β€” the only institution to do so. LSE (22nd) produces the highest-earning graduates at Β£35,000, with Bath (joint 16th) just behind at Β£34,000. Goldsmiths (53rd) has the lowest academic support in the field at 67%.
International relations focuses on the relationships between states, international organisations, non-state actors and global governance β€” typically covering topics like diplomacy, security, international law, conflict, globalisation and international political economy. Politics covers domestic and comparative political systems, political theory, elections, government and policy β€” with a more state-level focus. International studies is typically broader, often including area studies, international history and cultural dimensions alongside IR theory. If your interests are global governance, foreign policy, international security and multilateral institutions, IR is the most direct route. If you are more interested in UK political parties, comparative democracy or political theory, politics is more directly relevant. Many universities offer combined degrees spanning these areas.
International relations graduate salaries range from Β£20,000 to Β£35,000 within six months of graduating, based on 2027 data. Most produce graduates earning between Β£24,000 and Β£30,000. Entry-level policy analyst, research officer, NGO programme coordinator and civil service roles typically start at Β£22,000 to Β£28,000. Graduates accessing the Civil Service Fast Stream, international financial institutions or global consultancy firms typically start at Β£27,000 to Β£38,000. Language skills significantly increase both the career options available and the salary levels accessible, particularly for roles in international organisations or diplomacy.
International relations graduates work as policy analysts, diplomats (FCO), international development workers, NGO staff, think tank researchers, political risk analysts, intelligence analysts, civil servants, journalists, UN and multilateral organisation staff, international lawyers (with further study), international business analysts, trade advisers, humanitarian aid workers and international consultants. Major employers include the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, GCHQ, the Civil Service, UN agencies, the World Bank, major NGOs (Oxfam, Save the Children, MSF), international law firms, global consultancies and multinational corporations. The degree transfers well into finance, communications and public affairs.
Most IR degrees in the UK do not require a language at entry but offer or encourage language study as part of the programme. Some IR programmes β€” particularly those with a European politics or area studies focus β€” strongly recommend or include language modules. A language significantly increases your competitiveness for diplomatic, international organisation, foreign policy and development roles. French, Spanish, Arabic, Mandarin and Russian are the most practically useful languages for international careers. If you have a language and are interested in using it professionally, look for IR programmes that integrate language study or offer a year abroad. At universities where language study is optional, students who include it tend to access more internationally-focused graduate roles.
No specific A-level subjects are required by most IR programmes. Politics, History, Economics, Sociology, Geography, Law, Philosophy and Modern Languages are all relevant backgrounds. Entry requirements range from BCC at less selective institutions to A*AA at LSE and AAA at most Russell Group universities. Without a language A-level, access to combined IR and language degrees is limited but not impossible with further language study during the programme. A strong general education profile with essay-based subjects is the most important preparation β€” IR is an analytical and discursive discipline.
