What the ranking tells you about studying software engineering

Software engineering is a distinct discipline from computer science — it emphasises the systematic design, development, testing and maintenance of software systems at scale, including software architecture, agile and DevOps methodologies, quality assurance, project management and professional practice. With 58 universities in this ranking, variation in industry project work, placement connectivity, software tooling and the balance between theory and hands-on development is significant. Software engineering graduates enter one of the highest-demand and highest-paying discipline areas in the UK and global job market.

University of Winchester at 33rd: 50% teaching quality, 54% academic support

University of Winchester ranks 33rd with 86 points and achieves 50% teaching quality and 54% academic support — the lowest scores on both metrics in this 58-university field. Winchester ranks 33rd rather than last because of strong safety and satisfaction scores and low cost of living. The next-lowest teaching quality is Keele at 58%, Liverpool Hope at 60% and Newcastle at 61%. The next-lowest academic support is University of Central Lancashire at 55%. For a discipline where the quality of code review sessions, software architecture lectures and hands-on lab support directly determines graduate readiness, 50% teaching quality and 54% academic support require direct investigation before any application.

University of Southampton at joint 29th: £36,000 — the highest software engineering earnings in the UK

University of Southampton ranks joint 29th with 103 points and produces £36,000 — the highest graduate earnings in this 58-university field. Southampton ranks joint 29th because of relatively low sustainability score and below-average safety score. Its 77% academic support and 77% teaching quality are both below the field average for the top 30. Southampton's strong employer connections in defence, aerospace and technology industries drive the premium earnings. For students weighing employer access against course delivery scores, Southampton's position mirrors the Exeter and Bath pattern in robotics: research reputation and employer access produce premium earnings that the ranking position does not reflect.

Coventry University (joint 8th) achieves 95% teaching quality — the highest in the field — and 94% academic support alongside 95% teaching quality from a mid-table position. University of Brighton (joint 9th) achieves 100% academic support. University of Bradford (11th) achieves 95% academic support and 90% teaching quality from 11th. University of the West of England (2nd) achieves 95% academic support with 83% teaching quality. Teesside University (joint 28th) achieves 95% academic support and 90% teaching quality from 28th. For students comparing on course delivery quality specifically, Coventry's teaching quality score is the strongest measured in this field, and Brighton's 100% academic support is unmatched.

Software engineering degrees: your questions answered

Swansea University is the best university for software engineering according to the 2027 Unifresher Rankings. University of Southampton (joint 29th) produces the highest graduate earnings at £36,000. University of Brighton (joint 9th) achieves 100% academic support. Coventry University (joint 8th) achieves 95% teaching quality — the highest in the field. University of Winchester (33rd) has the lowest teaching quality at 50% and academic support at 54%.
Software engineering focuses on the practical, systematic process of building and maintaining software systems — including software architecture, agile development, DevOps, testing, quality assurance, team working and professional software practice. Computer science focuses more on theoretical foundations — algorithms, data structures, computability theory, programming languages, operating systems and mathematics of computation — with less emphasis on professional software development practice. Both lead to similar careers in software development. The distinction matters most if you want deep theoretical grounding in computing (computer science is stronger) or if you want to graduate immediately ready for professional software development roles in teams (software engineering is more directly applied). Many employers do not distinguish between the two at graduate entry. Check individual module lists — programmes vary significantly in how theoretical vs practical the content is.
Software engineering graduate salaries range from £23,000 to £36,000 within six months based on 2027 data. Most produce graduates earning £27,000 to £33,000. Graduate software engineers at major UK technology companies, defence and aerospace firms typically start at £28,000 to £40,000. Graduates at US-headquartered technology companies in London (Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple) start at £45,000 to £75,000+. Software engineering salary growth is among the fastest of any graduate discipline: senior software engineers with three to five years of experience typically earn £55,000 to £90,000 in the UK. The six-month earnings data substantially underrepresents the career trajectory for this discipline.
Software engineering graduates work as software engineers, backend developers, frontend developers, full-stack developers, DevOps engineers, site reliability engineers, software architects, QA and test engineers, mobile developers, embedded systems engineers, platform engineers, solutions architects and technical leads. Major employers include Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Apple, Spotify, Deliveroo, Monzo, Revolut, GCHQ, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, NHS Digital, Lloyds Banking Group, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs Technology, Deloitte, PwC Technology, Accenture, and hundreds of software consultancies, scale-ups and start-ups. Software engineering skills are in demand across every industry sector.
Maths is required or strongly preferred at most software engineering programmes due to the mathematical content in algorithms, data structures and systems. Computer Science A-level is accepted at all programmes and is directly relevant, though it is not universally required. Physics and Further Maths are advantageous at programmes with hardware, systems or embedded content. Entry requirements range from BCC at less selective institutions to A*AA at the most competitive. Prior programming experience is not formally required at most programmes but makes the transition significantly smoother — applicants who have written code in any language before starting are at a clear advantage. Most software engineering programmes will teach programming from scratch, but the pace can be demanding for those with no prior experience.
