What the ranking tells you about studying sports science

Sports science (also offered as sport and exercise science) is one of the most popular undergraduate degrees in the UK, offered at 78 universities in this ranking. The discipline combines exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, nutrition and dietetics, strength and conditioning, sports coaching, motor control and research methods. With such breadth, programme specialisation varies significantly — some programmes are more physiologically focused, others more psychological or performance-oriented. The quality of laboratory facilities, practical placement access and sports club partnerships matters enormously for a practice-based discipline.

University of Leeds — lowest academic support and teaching quality in the field

University of Leeds at joint 34th: 61% on both metrics

University of Leeds ranks joint 34th with 126 points and achieves 61% on both teaching quality and academic support — the lowest scores on both metrics in this 78-university field by a significant margin. The next-lowest teaching quality is Edinburgh Napier at 77% and Sheffield Hallam at 79%. The next-lowest academic support is Edinburgh Napier at 79% and University of East Anglia at 83%. Leeds ranks joint 34th because of reasonable sustainability and social life scores alongside £26,500 earnings. University of Nottingham (joint 34th) achieves 96% teaching quality and 93% academic support from the same position — a direct comparison that shows course delivery divergence between two institutions at identical overall scores.

UCL at 29th: £37,500 — the highest sports science earnings by £4,000

UCL ranks 29th with 133 points and produces £37,500 — the highest graduate earnings in this 78-university field, £4,000 above Brunel (41st, £33,500) and £7,500 above King's College London (joint 31st, £30,000). UCL ranks 29th because London's maximum cost of living penalty and below-average satisfaction (68%) suppress the overall position. Its course delivery scores (92% teaching quality, 90% academic support) are solid but not the strongest in the table. For students comparing UCL with top-ranked institutions on course delivery, Lancaster (joint 14th) achieves 100% academic support and 99% teaching quality alongside a stronger overall position. UCL's premium earnings reflect the strength of its research environment and employer access in life sciences, sports medicine and performance analysis.

University of Northampton (40th) achieves 100% teaching quality — the only institution in this 78-university field to do so. Lancaster University (joint 14th) achieves 100% academic support and 99% teaching quality from a much stronger overall position. Glyndwr University (5th), University of Gloucestershire (joint 9th), University of Salford (joint 14th), Coventry University (joint 20th) and University of Hull (49th) all achieve 100% academic support. Abertay University (43rd) achieves 99% teaching quality and 98% academic support from a position outside the top 40. For students comparing on course delivery quality in this large field, Northampton's 100% teaching quality and Lancaster's 100%/99% provide the clearest benchmarks.

Sports science degrees: your questions answered

Swansea University is the best university for sports science according to the 2027 Unifresher Rankings with 95% academic support and 96% teaching quality. UCL (29th) produces the highest graduate earnings at £37,500. University of Northampton (40th) achieves 100% teaching quality — the only institution in the field to do so. Lancaster University (joint 14th) achieves 100% academic support and 99% teaching quality. University of Leeds (joint 34th) has the lowest academic support and teaching quality at 61% on both metrics.
Sports science (or sport and exercise science) focuses on the scientific foundations of human performance — exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, nutrition, motor learning and research methodology. It is primarily an evidence-based science degree. Sports coaching focuses on coaching pedagogy, athlete development, performance analysis, team management and the practical delivery of sport. It is more vocational and practitioner-focused. Sports science graduates are stronger in scientific analysis, laboratory research and evidence-based performance roles. Sports coaching graduates are stronger for direct coaching careers. If you want to become a practising sports coach, sports coaching is more relevant. If you want to work in performance science, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, exercise physiology or academic research, sports science provides the necessary scientific foundation. Many programmes blend both — check module lists carefully.
Sports science graduate salaries range from £19,500 to £37,500 within six months based on 2027 data. Most programmes produce graduates earning between £22,000 and £28,000. Graduate strength and conditioning coaches and sports scientists at professional clubs typically start at £22,000 to £30,000. Exercise physiologists in NHS and private healthcare settings start at NHS Band 5 (approximately £28,000). Personal training and gym management roles start at £20,000 to £26,000. Performance analysts at professional clubs start at £22,000 to £32,000. With four to six years of experience, senior performance scientists and lead sports scientists at elite professional sports clubs typically earn £40,000 to £65,000. Academic and research roles require postgraduate study and typically start at £28,000 to £38,000.
Sports science graduates work as sports scientists, strength and conditioning coaches, exercise physiologists, performance analysts, sports coaches, personal trainers, sports therapists (with further training), physical education teachers (with PGCE), sports development officers, occupational health advisors, corporate wellness managers, fitness instructors, sports administrators, physical therapists (with postgraduate conversion) and academic researchers. Major employers include Premier League, Championship and international professional sports clubs, National Sport Centre academies, British Olympic Association, UK Sport, Sport England, NHS Trusts (exercise referral and cardiac rehabilitation), leisure trusts, Active Partnership organisations, schools and universities, private gyms and health clubs, and defence and military physical training.
Biology is required or strongly preferred at most sports science programmes due to the human anatomy, physiology and exercise science content. Physical Education A-level is widely accepted and directly relevant, though not universally required. Maths or Statistics is valued for programmes with quantitative research methods, biomechanics and data analysis content. Chemistry and Psychology are also relevant. Entry requirements range from BCC at less selective institutions to ABB at more competitive programmes. Sports science degree content includes laboratory practical work, statistical analysis and scientific report writing — applicants who have studied biology and are comfortable with data will find the transition much smoother.
