What the ranking tells you about studying zoology

Zoology covers the scientific study of animals — including animal behaviour, ecology, evolutionary biology, physiology, taxonomy, conservation, marine biology and field research methods. It is one of the most field-based life sciences degrees and varies significantly between programmes in the balance of laboratory work, fieldwork opportunities, overseas placements and conservation research partnerships. With 37 universities in this ranking, the quality of species access, field course locations and research group specialisms differs enormously.

University of the West of Scotland at joint 19th: 100% on both metrics

University of the West of Scotland ranks joint 19th with 80 points and achieves 100% on both teaching quality and academic support — the strongest course delivery double in this 37-university field. UWS ranks joint 19th because of low sustainability, safety and earnings scores. Its course delivery data is the most remarkable in this ranking given its overall position. Swansea (1st) achieves 100% academic support and 92% teaching quality. Plymouth (2nd) achieves 100% teaching quality and 97% academic support. Royal Holloway (3rd) also achieves 100% teaching quality. University of Sheffield (joint 10th) and Nottingham Trent (joint 5th) also achieve 100% academic support. For students comparing on course delivery specifically, UWS’s 100%/100% from 19th is the most significant gap between position and course delivery quality in this field.

Newcastle University at joint 19th: 68% academic support

Newcastle University ranks joint 19th with 80 points and achieves 68% academic support — the lowest in this 37-university field. The next-lowest are University of Roehampton at 73% and University of Worcester at 77%. Newcastle ranks joint 19th because of reasonable sustainability and social life scores alongside £25,000 earnings. Its 77% teaching quality is also in the lower tier of the field. For students drawn to Newcastle by reputation, the course delivery scores in this specific zoology programme are significantly below the field average and below Newcastle’s own performance in other subjects in this ranking.

University of St Andrews (4th) achieves the joint-highest earnings at £30,000 alongside 95% academic support and 96% teaching quality from a strong 4th-place position. University of Edinburgh (joint 15th) and Queen Mary University of London (joint 16th) also produce £30,000 but from lower overall positions. QMUL (joint 16th) achieves 95% academic support and 93% teaching quality alongside the premium earnings. For students wanting the combination of the highest earnings and strong course delivery in zoology, St Andrews provides the most favourable single data profile in this field.

Zoology degrees: your questions answered

Swansea University is the best university for zoology according to the 2027 Unifresher Rankings with 100% academic support and 92% teaching quality. University of St Andrews (4th) produces the highest earnings at £30,000 alongside 95% academic support and 96% teaching quality. University of the West of Scotland (joint 19th) achieves 100% on both metrics from 19th position. Newcastle University (joint 19th) has the lowest academic support at 68%. University of Roehampton (25th, last) has the lowest academic support at 73% and lowest teaching quality at 73%.
Zoology focuses specifically on animals — their behaviour, ecology, physiology, evolution, taxonomy and conservation. It provides greater depth in animal-specific content including comparative anatomy, ethology and wildlife biology than a broader biological sciences degree. Biology (or biological sciences) is broader, covering plants, microorganisms and molecular biology alongside animals, providing more flexibility but less animal specialisation. Marine biology focuses on aquatic ecosystems and marine organisms specifically. If your primary interest is working with animals in ecology, conservation, wildlife management or zoological research, zoology provides the most relevant specialisation. If you want more flexibility in your career options across the life sciences, biological sciences may be preferable. Many zoology programmes include marine elements — check fieldwork locations and module lists carefully.
Zoology graduate salaries range from £20,500 to £30,000 within six months based on 2027 data. Most programmes produce graduates earning between £22,000 and £27,000. Graduate ecologists and environmental consultants typically start at £22,000 to £28,000. Wildlife officers and conservation officers at NGOs and government bodies typically start at £22,000 to £28,000. Zookeepers at major zoological collections typically start at £21,000 to £26,000. Research assistants and laboratory technicians in academia and industry start at £22,000 to £28,000. Zoology graduates who continue to postgraduate study in ecology, conservation, veterinary medicine or data science access significantly higher earnings. The six-month data understates the long-term trajectory for postgraduate-qualified zoologists in research and ecology.
Zoology graduates work as ecologists, conservation scientists, wildlife officers, zookeepers, marine biologists, environmental consultants, nature reserve managers, wildlife rangers, research scientists, science communicators, environmental educators, veterinary technicians (with further training), animal welfare officers, biodiversity officers, RSPB and Wildlife Trust officers, government environmental scientists and science journalists. Major employers include RSPB, Wildlife Trust, WWF, ZSL (London Zoo), Chester Zoo, Natural England, Marine Conservation Society, DEFRA, Environment Agency, ecological consultancies, Natural History Museum, universities, pharmaceutical companies and environmental charities. Zoology’s data analysis and field research skills also transfer into data science, GIS mapping and environmental policy roles.
Biology A-level is required at all zoology programmes. A second science (Chemistry, Maths, Physics, Geography or Environmental Science) is required or preferred at most programmes. Chemistry is required at more research-intensive programmes with biochemistry and physiology content. Maths is increasingly valued for programmes with strong quantitative ecology, statistical modelling and data analysis components. Entry requirements range from BCC at less selective institutions to A*AA at the most competitive programmes. Zoology degree content includes statistics and quantitative ecology that requires mathematical confidence — applicants without A-level Maths should be aware the quantitative content can be demanding.
