What the ranking tells you about studying graphic design

Graphic design is one of the most oversubscribed creative disciplines in the UK. With 68 universities in this ranking, the variation in studio quality, software provision, industry briefs and placement opportunities is substantial. This ranking scores all 68 on eight consistent metrics, giving you comparative course delivery data that most applicant guidance ignores for arts subjects.

Four universities achieving 100% academic support

University of Gloucestershire (7th, 168 points), University of Derby (joint 15th, 149 points), University of Central Lancashire (27th, 125 points) and Coventry University (18th, 142 points) — alongside Coventry's 98% teaching quality, the highest in the field — all represent strong course delivery profiles distributed across a wide range of overall positions. Gloucestershire leads with 100% academic support and 96% teaching quality in the top 10. Derby achieves the same double from the joint 15th position. UCLan at 27th achieves 100% academic support and 96% teaching quality. For students who prioritise the quality of tutorial feedback and studio supervision, all four departments have the strongest measured course delivery in the field.

Bath Spa at joint 13th: the most notable teaching quality concern in the top 20

Bath Spa University ranks joint 13th with 152 points and achieves 65% teaching quality — the lowest in this entire 68-university ranking. Every other graphic design department in this table achieves at least 67% teaching quality. Bath Spa's strong sustainability and safety scores sustain its top-15 position, alongside strong student satisfaction. Its academic support of 78% is also below the field median. For a studio-intensive discipline where the quality of briefs, feedback and tutoring directly shapes your portfolio, a 65% teaching quality score is worth factoring into any comparison with the 13 departments ranked above it, all of which achieve 82% or higher.

University of Southampton at 35th: £36,000 graduate earnings — the highest in this field by £7,000. Southampton ranks 35th with 112 points, a score reflecting its low sustainability index and city-level metrics rather than course quality. Its 76% teaching quality is below the field average. The £36,000 graduate earnings are substantially higher than any other graphic design department — the next-highest is University of East London at £29,000. Southampton's graphic design graduates access premium design roles in London and the South East labour market, which inflates six-month earnings significantly. For students aiming at high-earning commercial design roles, Southampton's earnings data is notable — but the course delivery scores (76% teaching, 90% academic support) are not exceptional.

UAL at joint 22nd

University of the Arts London ranks joint 22nd with 138 points, achieving 86% teaching quality and 88% academic support — both below the field median. UAL — including Central Saint Martins, London College of Communication and Camberwell — is the most globally prominent graphic design education brand in the UK. It ranks joint 22nd because London's cost of living (91 — maximum in this field) significantly suppresses its overall score. Its teaching quality and academic support are genuinely below the field average. Students comparing UAL's industry connections and alumni network against the data from Cardiff Metropolitan (1st), MMU (4th) or Oxford Brookes (9th) are making a trade-off that this ranking makes explicit.

Graphic design degrees: your questions answered

Cardiff Metropolitan University is the best university for graphic design in the UK according to the 2027 Unifresher Rankings, scoring 186 points with 98% academic support and 93% teaching quality. University of Worcester is second, University of Reading third. University of Gloucestershire (7th) achieves 100% academic support. Bath Spa (joint 13th) has the lowest teaching quality in the field at 65%. University of Brighton (joint 41st) has the lowest academic support at 54%. Southampton (35th) produces the highest-earning graduates at £36,000.
Graphic design graduate salaries range from £17,000 to £36,000 within six months of graduating, based on 2027 data. Most universities produce graduates earning between £20,000 and £25,000. Junior designer and design assistant roles at agencies and studios typically start at £20,000 to £26,000. Graduates accessing London, South East or major city commercial studios typically earn more. Senior graphic designers and art directors with 5 to 10 years of experience typically earn £35,000 to £60,000. A strong portfolio and commercial client experience during the degree often matters more than starting salary for long-term career trajectory.
Graphic design graduates work as graphic designers, art directors, brand designers, UI/UX designers, motion designers, packaging designers, editorial designers, digital content designers, web designers, design strategists, advertising creatives, typography specialists, illustration creatives and design educators. Major employers include design studios, advertising agencies, in-house design teams at brands and retailers, publishing companies, digital agencies, film and television production companies, public sector organisations and tech companies. The overlap between graphic design and digital product design (UI/UX) has created significant demand for graduates with both visual and digital interaction skills, typically at higher starting salaries than traditional print or brand design roles.
It depends on your career direction. A graphic design degree gives you a broader foundation across visual communication, typography, brand, print and digital — the versatile foundation for most design careers. A dedicated UI/UX or digital design degree focuses specifically on interface design, user research, interaction design and prototyping — directly relevant for product design roles at tech companies. If your ambition is specifically to work in digital product design for apps or software, a UI/UX focused degree may give you a more direct pathway and typically commands higher starting salaries. If you want flexibility across brand, editorial, advertising, packaging and digital, graphic design is the more versatile foundation. Many graphic design programmes now include significant digital and UX content — check the specific modules before applying.
A portfolio is required by most graphic design programmes and typically carries more weight than specific A-level subjects. Art and Design or Graphic Communication A-level provides relevant background. A Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (one year after A-levels at most art colleges) is the standard preparatory route and is accepted or preferred at most graphic design degrees. Entry requirements range from 64 UCAS points at less selective institutions to BBB at competitive programmes. Some universities require an interview as part of the selection process. A strong portfolio demonstrating conceptual thinking, typographic understanding, layout skills and at least some digital work significantly strengthens your application. Check individual portfolio requirements carefully — they vary considerably between departments.
