You might have thought about applying to the University of Salford but before doing so there is a burning question in your mind, where would I live? If so, or even if you’re just curious, then you’ve come to the right place! There are lots of places where students live while in Salford and this article is going to take you through some of those top choices.
There are a number of different types of accommodation for students to choose from, including:
- Both on and off campus student halls,
- Private student accommodation,
- Luxury student accommodation.
Each type of accommodation offers something different for each of its students so it’s very important that you make sure you’ve researched in depth about the place you’re looking to live in for the duration of your study, whether you decide to only stay there for a year or the entirety of your time in university. So lets jump into some of these different accommodations you can find in Salford and see what they have to offer!
Student Halls
Peel Park Quarter – On Campus
This is a very popular choice among first year students. Being directly on the main campus it allows students direct access to all the facilities and creates a large sense of community, especially since this accommodation is largely known for housing predominantly first year students. Having a community in the place you live will be useful for those who experience anxiety and nerves about living alone, especially if it’s the first time.
Peel Park Quarters is broken up into a number of different blocks, creating even smaller communities inside the already large one. There are 2 different sites across the campus with 1 holding 4 blocks of flats and the other holding 5. Found in each of these sites are a range of amenities:-
- A cinema room,
- Common rooms with games such as pool tables and table football,
- A free gym
- A multi faith room (the university also has a Faith Centre on campus),
- Laundry facilities, etc.
There are a range of different rooms to choose from, ranging from bronze to diamond. This also means that prices differ depending on the choice of room, with bronze being the cheapest at £157.41pw and diamond being the most expensive at £185.54pw. These prices are what are currently listed for the 2024/25 year and do change on a yearly basis. There are also accessible rooms available for those who need it. Within every room there is adequate storage in the form of shelves, under bed and a wardrobe; and as well as this have an en-suite (so no bathroom wars) and a safety lock-box for any valuables.
John Lester and Eddie Colman Courts, Meyrick Rd
Similar to Peel Park Quarter, John Lester and Eddie Colman Courts are another set of student halls owned by the same people as Peel Park (Campus Living Villages) but are located within a 5 minute walk from the Frederick Road campus and around a 10 minute walk from the main one. This accommodation is also only a 5 minute walk from the local shopping centre where students can find all sorts of shops from supermarkets, to charity and clothing stores, to hairdressers/barbers.
Though owned by the same company there are quite a few differences between the two halls. For instance John Lester and Eddie Colman Courts is open to students from all years. These halls are also smaller than their other location and only consist of a single site however it does still have its own amenities such as:-
- A cinema room,
- Common rooms filled with games,
- A free gym,
- A library,
- Laundry facilities, etc.
The rooms at John Lester and Eddie Colman Courts are also different from Peel Park Quarter. The biggest difference between them is probably that the flats all have shared bathrooms, so if you would feel more comfortable with your own bathroom then perhaps this place isn’t for you. Also not every flat has a lounge area but one is bookable on the website, just be sure to look at the options. Like Peel Park the rooms here range from bronze to platinum with the price for bronze rooms being £118pw to the price for a platinum being £158pw. There are also accessible rooms available to book too in this place.
Private Student Halls
Tramways Sanctuary Students, Frederick Rd
Let’s move onto private accommodation.
Tramways is just one of the private accommodations located in the Salford area and not only is it one of the smaller ones but it is also one of the cheaper ones. With just a 5 minute walk to the main campus it’s great for those of us who like that extra little lie in in the mornings.
Compared to Peel Park and John Lester and Eddie Colman Courts Tramways has far less amenities however there is still an on site laundry facilities as well as a couple of vending machines inside the laundry room.
Rooms here are separated into either a single standard or a double. The single standard room contains a desk with drawers attached, wall mounted storage boxes, under bed storage and a small wardrobe. The flat is split between 4 different people, each with their own bathroom. A double room, at £150pw, offers exactly the same as the single room except the bed is larger, as is the desk and the flat is split between either 4, 6 or 7 people. In every flat there is a shared kitchen space with a small lounge area in it for people to sit back and watch some TV, or if you and your flatmates want to enjoy a drink with some games.
Luxury Student Accommodation
True Student, King William St
The most expensive of the accommodations, True Student sits just outside of the reputable Media City and is a short walk away from the University of Salford’s third campus. For those who are based at either of the other 2 campuses there are 2 bus stops nearby that have buses that can get you there in around 15 minutes (traffic depending). While it might be the most expensive out of all the other places we’ve looked at it also offers the most compared to other accommodations, which could be why its a popular choice among students who wish to experience more of luxury living. Here is a list of some of the amenities you can find at True Student:-
- A cinema room,
- Study zones,
- A gym (with free fitness classes offered),
- Sky lounges,
- 24hr concierge service/security,
- A SLIDE!!!! (Speaking from experience, I can understand if people would want to live there just for this reason alone),
- Laundry facilities, etc.
Rooms here come in 2 different options depending on your budget and your preference of living. There are either apartments which contain an en-suite, a shared kitchen and a lounge space. Apartments come in 3 different options for you to choose from. Or studio style rooms complete with a kitchenette and an en-suite; again these types of rooms come with a number of choices. Again prices may vary depending on the type of room you choose and the year in which you apply. For the 2024/25 season apartments start from £234pw and reach up to £265pw, and studio rooms start from £240pw and reach a whopping £310pw.
So, now you know. There are so many places for students to live in Salford, each one different from the last. When applying for student accommodation you need to be sure that it will be the right place for you and you are going to be comfortable. So if you’re not comfortable with sharing a bathroom make sure you choose one with an en-suite. Or if you prefer less people in your flat be sure you find somewhere that fits your vibe.
Also, read about the experiences of other people online. Look for reviews of different places and whether others liked it or not, and if not why didn’t they like it; maybe the reason will be the reason you decide if you can see yourself living there or not.
