When it comes to moving to university, one of the most nerve-wracking parts is trying to decide where to live in first year. We’ve helped by putting together a list of the best student halls in Southampton in 2024/25.
For anyone who is looking to study at the University of Southampton or Solent University, you have so many choices of where to live in first year. Do you want to live closer to campus and keep your attendance up, or save on taxis from the club and live more central? Here are the best options out there for Southampton students.
Private Halls
Mercury Point
Mercury Point, previously called Liberty Quays, houses 562 students. It’s 10 minutes away from Solent University or a bus journey from the University of Southampton and provides students with the choice between ensuite rooms with shared living spaces and kitchens, or self-contained studios. The building itself is close to the city centre, making it ideal for those looking to make the most out of the city. They also have bike storage to help you get around.
Crescent Place
Crescent Place is right in the middle of the city, meaning it is also right in the middle of the fun! It is a short bus journey from the University of Southampton, and over the road from Solent. There is a huge ASDA nearby, as well as the West Quay shopping centre and lots of green space. The site has 24-hour staff, ensuites, an on-site gym, laundry facilities, a common room and bike storage.
Orion Point
Previously called Liberty Point, Orion Point is home to 671 students. It’s super close to Solent and the city centre, with the University of Southampton being only a short bus journey away. There are options of ensuite rooms, 2 bedroom flats or fully enclosed studios. There are also common areas that are perfect for meeting people, equipped with comfy seats, pin pong tables, TVs, and there’s even a well kitted out gym. Both an Aldi and an ASDA are 10 minutes walk away, and bars and shops are just around the corner!
University of Southampton
Glen Eyre
With a super useful 24 hour reception, a regular Unilink bus service, laundry facilities, bike storage, common rooms, a gym, a computer room, music room, BBQ areas and even a squash court, Glen Eyre is one of the favourite uni owned halls. The halls are right next to the university’s Highfield campus, perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to have to bus in every day. When applying, you can request a quieter flat, a single-sex flat and even a sober flat.
Wessex Lane
Wessex Lane accommodation is close to shops, bars, and cafes, with Portswood nearby. It’s also close to the Highfield Campus, and has both self and part catered options. The halls have access to bike storage, a TV room, a gym, a computer room, a music room, restaurant, BBQ areas and even a snooker room. When applying, you can request a quieter flat, a single-sex flat and even a sober flat. Prices start at £119 per week.
Archers Road
Based closer to the city centre, Archers Road has a 24-hour reception, laundry facilities, bike storage and a TV room. It’s close to a Lidl, as well as being only a short distance from all the joys of Southampton city centre. The rooms are split across Romero and Gateley halls, and prices start at £141 per week for the coming academic year.
Solent University
Deanery
10 minutes away from Solent’s main campus, Deanery is home to 422 students. The ensuite rooms are arranged into flats of 7, 8 or 10, and are split into 3 buildings. Super close to the city centre, Ocean Village and Oxford Street, the flats are clear student favourites. Each flat has access to a shared kitchen, a common room with Freeview, pool and a ping pong table, study pods, laundry facilities, Wii room and bike storage.
Hamwic
Refurbished in 2019, Hamwic has 228 ensuite rooms. It is 10 minutes from the main campus and so is relatively central in the city. The rooms have access to shared kitchens, a common room, laundry facilities, bike storage, and all of the perks of the city centre. Prices start at £129.50 per week.
