The best Oxford college accommodation

1. St John's College

£190.40/week, 2026/27Collegeen-suiteshared bathroom

St John's tops our list because it scores on every test: on-site rooms for the whole degree, every reported room on the main site and the lowest average cost in the University's table. Its own 2026-27 rents are £1,203.50 to £1,410.56 per term, plus a fixed charge of £277.40 per term. Most rooms use shared bathrooms, so this is about value and community more than en-suite comfort.

Worth knowing: Only 35 of its 410 reported rooms are en-suite, and first years generally cannot get them without a proven need.

2. St Hugh's College

£214.36/week, 2026/27Collegeen-suiteshared bathroom

St Hugh's offers rooms throughout your course, and the University's table shows all 408 on its own site, around extensive gardens. It has a good share of en-suites at 163, more than most colleges with a full on-site offer. The most common rent reported is £5,695 for 186 days, so it costs more than St John's but offers more bathrooms.

Worth knowing: It is one of Oxford's largest colleges, so check how long the walk or cycle is to your department.

3. Christ Church

£251.92/week, 2026/27Collegeen-suiteshared bathroom

Christ Church has the most en-suite-heavy offer on this list, with 390 of its 466 reported rooms en-suite and all of them on the main site. Accommodation is usually offered for all years. It is also the most expensive college here on average, so you are paying for comfort and location rather than value.

Worth knowing: It has the highest average cost in our 14, and the University's listing shows no on-site gym.

4. Magdalen College

£225.20/week, 2026/27Collegeen-suiteshared bathroom

Magdalen guarantees single rooms throughout your degree and charges one flat daily rate for undergraduates, £29.16 in 2025-26, which removes any worry about being priced out of a better room. That charge includes weekly cleaning, heating, electricity and bed linen. Most rooms are on the main site, and external properties are typically a 10 to 20 minute walk or cycle.

Worth knowing: Only 75 main-site rooms are en-suite, and its flat rate is published for 2025-26, not 2026-27.

Key facts

Popular with: University of Oxford

Best for: One flat rate for every room

See Magdalen College on the official site

5. Oriel College

£221.20/week, 2026/27Collegeen-suiteshared bathroom

Oriel guarantees rooms for your entire course, three or four years, and says this is unusual among Oxford colleges. Rooms are graded, with the top A* grade listed at £2,124.12 per term and the college quoting a general range of around £1,500 to £2,000 per term. A high share of rooms are en-suite and on the main site, which is why it ranks well.

Worth knowing: Prices depend on room grade and the grade table is labelled 2025/26, so check the 2026-27 fees page.

Popular with: University of Oxford

6. Trinity College

£199.04/week, 2026/27Collegeen-suiteshared bathroom

Trinity guarantees accommodation throughout your degree and has one of the lower average costs here. Its 2026/27 table lists main-site rooms at £1,929.60 per term, en-suite or standard, so you pay the same for a bathroom of your own. The rest of the rooms are in off-site properties in North Oxford.

Worth knowing: Trinity's termly rents exclude utilities and insurance, which go on your battels separately.

Key facts

Popular with: University of Oxford

Where: 191 of 323 rooms on the main site

Best for: Same rent for en-suite and standard

See Trinity College on the official site

7. Wadham College

£238.04/week, 2026/27Collegeen-suiteshared bathroom

Wadham usually offers rooms for all years, and just over half are on the main site, with a large share of en-suites off site. Its most common rent is high on the University's table at £6,910 for 177 days. Choose it if you are happy to pay more for a wider mix of en-suite rooms.

Worth knowing: Its most common rent is among the highest on this list.

Key facts

8. Balliol College

£229.24/week, 2026/27Collegeen-suiteshared bathroom

Balliol usually offers rooms for all years, with a central main site on Broad Street and most en-suites held in off-site buildings. The most common rent on the University's table covers 265 days, far longer than most colleges, at £8,999. This suits students who want to stay in Oxford outside term, but compare the daily cost, not the headline.

Worth knowing: Many students pay for 265 days, so the annual bill looks much bigger than at term-only colleges.

Key facts

Where: 212 of 407 rooms on the main site

Best for: Staying in Oxford over vacations

See Balliol College on the official site

9. Corpus Christi College

£223.68/week, 2026/27Collegeen-suiteshared bathroom

Corpus guarantees every undergraduate a room for their degree and publishes a clear average of £233.80 a week, or £33.40 a day. First years live on site with some third and fourth years, and everyone else is 10 to 20 minutes' walk away. That makes the commute small even in the years you move out of the main site.

Worth knowing: Most second years will live off the main site, in properties around the city.

Key facts

Popular with: University of Oxford

Where: 132 of 274 rooms on the main site

Best for: Small college, clear pricing

See Corpus Christi College on the official site

10. Merton College

£203.60/week, 2026/27Collegeen-suiteshared bathroom

Merton usually offers rooms for all years, and its most common rent of £5,003 for 175 days is one of the lowest on the University's table. Just under half of its reported rooms are on the main site, in medieval and 17th-century surroundings. On cost alone it would rank far higher, but later-year students are likely to live off site.

Worth knowing: Most off-site rooms are not en-suite, at 154 of 165.

Key facts

Popular with: University of Oxford

Where: 153 of 318 rooms on the main site

Best for: Low rent in a historic setting

See Merton College on the official site

11. Jesus College

£194.60/week, 2026/27Collegeen-suiteshared bathroom

Jesus says all undergraduates can live in college accommodation in the city centre for their entire degree, and its average cost is the second lowest here. Most rooms are off site, though, and the most common contract covers 274 days at £6,897. It is a good fit for students who want to remain in Oxford for most of the year.

Worth knowing: There are no en-suites in its 229 off-site rooms, and long contracts mean a larger total.

Key facts

Popular with: University of Oxford

Where: 155 of 384 rooms on the main site

Best for: Long contracts at a low average cost

See Jesus College on the official site

12. Hertford College

£206.28/week, 2026/27Collegeen-suiteshared bathroom

Hertford guarantees college-owned rooms for all years and charges the same for every room, whatever the size, location or facilities: £29.47 a night, or £1,827.14 per term, for 2026-27. That fairness is rare and removes a lot of the ballot stress. It ranks lower here only because most rooms are off the main site.

Worth knowing: It reports no en-suites on the main site, so a private bathroom means living off site.

Key facts

Popular with: University of Oxford

Where: 124 of 367 rooms on the main site

Best for: Flat rent regardless of the room

See Hertford College on the official site

13. Somerville College

£199.80/week, 2026/27Collegeen-suiteshared bathroom

Somerville says it is one of very few colleges able to house all undergraduates in college for every year of their degree. Its average cost is among the lowest here, with published daily rates of £27.61 for a standard room and £30.37 for en-suite, subject to annual review. Most rooms sit off the main site on the University's table, which is why it falls down this ranking.

Worth knowing: En-suites are not offered to first years, and the daily rates do not state a year.

Key facts

Popular with: University of Oxford

Where: 84 of 305 rooms on the main site

Best for: All years in college at low cost

See Somerville College on the official site

14. Worcester College

£221.52/week, 2026/27Collegeen-suiteshared bathroom

Worcester usually offers three years, not all years, so it ranks last on our first test, but all 416 reported rooms are on its main site, over half of them en-suite. It also has gardens and on-site sports pitches. If you are on a three-year course, this could easily be your top choice.

Worth knowing: A four-year course may mean finding a room for your final year, so ask the college.

Will the maintenance loan cover it?

The maximum loan for a student in England living away from home outside London is £10,830 for 2026/27. Most students get less, because it is means-tested. Here is how the cheapest and dearest contracts on this page compare with that maximum.

Lowest contract total44% of the maximum loan

St John's College: £4,760 over 25 weeks leaves £6,070 for everything else.

Highest contract total58% of the maximum loan

Christ Church: £6,298 over 25 weeks leaves £4,532 for everything else.

Where students live in Oxford

Everyone on the main site

St John's, St Hugh's, Christ Church and Worcester report all their rooms on the main site. These suit students who want to stay close to their college community in every year.

Worth knowing: Availability can vary, and Worcester usually offers three years rather than all years.

Main site plus nearby annexes

Colleges like Magdalen, Oriel and Trinity keep most rooms on site and use properties nearby. External Magdalen properties are typically a 10 to 20 minute walk or cycle away, and Trinity's are in North Oxford.

Worth knowing: You may live off site in some years, depending on the ballot.

Mostly off site

Hertford, Somerville and Jesus keep most rooms off the main site while still offering all years. Rent is often lower on average, so they suit people who care more about cost than being in the main quad.

Worth knowing: Check how far the off-site building is from your department and how meals work.

FAQs

Is there an official ranking of Oxford college accommodation?

No. Neither the University nor the colleges rank accommodation. This is Unifresher's own editorial ranking, built only from published facts: how many years rooms are usually offered, what share of reported rooms are on the main site, and the University's weighted average cost for 175 days in 2026-27. It does not measure how nice any room feels.

Which Oxford college has the best accommodation?

On our criteria, St John's. It usually offers rooms for all years, reports all 410 rooms on its main site and has the University's lowest average cost at £4,760 for 175 days. If en-suite matters more than cost, Christ Church has 390 main-site en-suites, but the highest average in our list at £6,298.

Which Oxford colleges offer accommodation for all years?

Thirteen of the 14 here usually do, including St John's, St Hugh's, Christ Church, Magdalen, Oriel, Trinity and Hertford. Others on the University's pages usually offer three years, such as Worcester, Keble and Exeter. St Anne's lists first year and one other year. Always check the college's page, because the terms and wording vary.

What is the cheapest Oxford college for accommodation?

St John's has the lowest weighted average for 2026-27, at £4,760 for 175 days including utilities and services. Jesus is next in our 14 at £4,865, then Trinity at £4,976 and Somerville at £4,995. Compare the most common rent and contract length as well, since Jesus's most common contract covers 274 days.

Are first years guaranteed accommodation at Oxford?

Yes. The University says all first-year undergraduates are guaranteed accommodation in their college, and that many students continue to live in for their whole degree. Its college pages also show whether all first years live on site. Later years vary by college, and every college offers at least some further accommodation, though terms differ.

Are meals included in Oxford college rent?

Generally no. Colleges usually charge separately for meals, and the University's table estimates three meals a day for 175 days at between £1,397 at Balliol and £4,096 at Magdalen in 2026-27. The University warns that those figures may not be directly comparable, because catering arrangements vary greatly between colleges, so check each college.

How do you get a room in an Oxford college?

You normally do not make a separate application as a first year, because colleges allocate rooms for you. At Queen's, for example, rooms are allocated at random. In later years many colleges use a ballot, such as the student-run systems at St John's, Queen's and Somerville, so your choice depends on your place.

How we built this guide: prices, contract lengths and facilities come from university and operator websites where they publish them, and from named listing sites otherwise. We checked them in November 2026 and each price links to its source. Rent for the contract is our own sum of the lowest listed weekly rent multiplied by its charged weeks, before any deposit, booking fee or discount.
