Finding a student house can be one of the most exciting, yet challenging parts of your first year at university. Student housing can come in all shapes and sizes. But wherever you’re living, here are 10 things that we guarantee you will find in every student house.

1. Clothes Airers

You will be hard-pressed to find a student house that is not full of clothes airers. Especially in a smaller house, every nook and cranny can be turned into a space to dry clothes. As a cheaper, more environmentally-friendly method of drying clothes, it’s no wonder that many students use these (just as long as you remember to open a window while drying them – you don’t want mould to grow!).

2. Bins that are always full

No matter how frequently you empty them, they always seem to be full. No one wants to take it out, which leads to a more full, more disgusting bin, making it all the more unpleasant for whoever eventually has to take it out. While no one wants to deal with it, don’t be that housemate who makes a fuss when it’s their turn, the rest of your house will appreciate it. Read our guide, How to deal with messy housemates, to find out what to do.

3. Empty bottles of alcohol

This of course depends on whether you drink or not, but in the windows of many student houses, you can expect to find empty bottles of alcohol to show those passing that they indeed do drink. Empty bottles can make an interesting talking point when friends or family come to visit, but clearing them out at the end of the year may be a bigger hassle than it’s worth!

4. A pint glass from your local pub

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a student house without a stolen pint glass or two. Now, it may not necessarily be used as a pint glass, but it can definitely provide a unique addition to your cupboard. Whoever said a night out to the local Spoons couldn’t also be a shopping trip?

5. A stolen traffic cone

Similarly, you may wake up one day after a wild night out and come to find that there is now a traffic cone in your house. No one remembers how it got there, but it just becomes part of the house, no questions asked. Honestly, I’m here for it. It’s definitely a conversation starter.

6. Student cookbooks

If your parents are like mine, you may have been given student cookbooks before moving out. While it’s the thought that counts, these books have never been opened and will remain in a pile in the kitchen. It’s just what happens.

7. Take-Out Menus

Following on is the reason why the student cookbooks have never been opened. After a long day of lectures, many students would rather get takeout from the local pizza place overcooking a proper meal. Whether they’re stashed away in a drawer or in a pile on the kitchen table, there’s bound to be a number of takeout menus in every student house.

8. The Pile Of Bills

Similarly, next to the pile of take-out menus, you can probably find a pile of bills. They probably haven’t been opened because bills are the least enjoyable part of university. While they do need to be dealt with, who can blame you for putting it off? Adulting- who wants to do that?

9. University Merch

In every student house, you’re bound to find some merch from your university. Whether it’s a freebie mug from freshers week or a hoodie that you bought from the student union; everyone leaves uni with some sort of merch from their school. You’ve gotta show off that school pride!

10. Loads of photos

Lastly, and the most sentimental one on this list, is a collection of photos of memories. Whether it’s friends from home, family, new friends from uni, a partner or a combination of the above; a wall of memories helps to make uni feel more homely and remember all the good times when times get tough.
