It’s one of the most beautiful places to be a student, but did you know Bath has been home to many-a-famous student. From international sports stars to legends of day time TV, check out all these famous faces who studied in Bath.
1. Steve Borthwick
Profession: Rugby player
About: Man-mountain Borthwick managed to juggle studying for a degree in economics with politics at the University of Bath while playing professional rugby for Bath RFC. Luckily for all of us, it was the rugby he pursued — going on to captain England and playing for some of the biggest clubs in the country. Now he has become a lecturer himself (sort-of) after becoming forwards coach for the national team.
2. Mary Berry
Profession: TV presenter and chef
About: Everyone’s favourite cake whizz has strong ties to Bath. Her father was mayor of the city in 1952 and helped to establish the University of Bath at Claverton Bath. She studied catering and institutional management at Bath College of Domestic Science, which later became Bath Spa University.
3. Fred V & Grafix
Profession: Musicians
About: The Exeter duo of Fred Vahrman and Josh Jackson are firm favourites in the drum ‘n’ bass world, taking inspiration from legends in the game such as Pendulum and High Contrast. This summer they’ll be hitting the festival circuit bringing big beats to fests such as Leeds, Boardmasters and more. But just a few, short years ago the pair could be found studying at Bath Spa University. How time flies.
4. Gabrielle Aplin
Profession: Musician
About: Aplin shot to national acclaim with her soft and haunting rendition of The Power Of Love, which featured in John Lewis’ Christmas advert. With the release of the single she claimed a No.1 and, six months later, she released her debut album, English Rain. We have the City of Bath College to thank for her musical education.
5. Amy Williams
Profession: Skeleton racer
About: Williams’ skeleton career, quite literally, began while she was studying at the University of Bath. Originally a runner, Williams converted to skeleton after giving it a shot on a push-start track at the uni. From there she hit dizzying heights, becoming the first Brit to win an individual gold at the winter Olympics games in more than 30 years. Her triumph at the 2010 Vancouver Games saw her become a household name.
6. Kate Garraway
Profession: TV presenter
About: An absolute legend of daytime TV, Kate Garraway has been a permanent fixture of ITV’s morning slot. She’s presented for GMTV, Daybreak and Good Morning Britain. She was also a fan favourite on Strictly Come Dancing, partnering with Anton du Beke. She studied English and history at Bath College of Higher Education.
7. Samantha Murray
Profession: Pentathlete
About: Former Team GB athlete studied politics and French at the University of Bath, but it was in athletics in which she would make her name. Murray secured a silver medal on home soil at the 2012 London Olympic Games and a gold in the World Championships in the same year. fixture of ITV’s morning slot.
