So, you are a student in Nottingham? If so, then you may have begun to realise that you have a whole host of options in terms of student housing. Both of the universities in Nottingham offer halls of residence as a choice for their students. There are, of course, also private houses and shared flats to consider too, as well as the potential alternative for some, to live rent-free with their parents. If you are feeling a bit overwhelmed by which option, would be the most suitable for you, then please read on. We can take you through the pros and cons of each choice, and help you find the perfect student housing!
Catered Halls
Catered halls would be a great choice for any first years who are not excited by the thought of preparing their own meals. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided for you, and most catered halls also give you access to a small kitchen, so you will still be able to prepare small snacks and meals. Obviously, this option is a little pricier than non-catered student accommodation. However, as you will be avoiding the costs of expensive (but delicious) takeaways, you may even save money in the long run. At the University of Nottingham, all catered halls of residence are conveniently located on campus at University Park, so you will only be a 5-minute walk away from your lectures. Hugh Stewart Hall and Cripps Hall are considered to be some of the best residences, but each hall will offer a unique and rewarding experience. Nottingham Trent does not offer any catered options for student housing, so please continue reading to discover what else is available!
Self-catered Halls
In a self-catered hall of residence, you will normally be sharing a small flat with a communal kitchen/dining area. The kitchen is normally the perfect place to meet new people and socialise with friends. If you manage to budget well, self-catered accommodation can be a reasonably priced option. Dependent on the accommodation you choose, you may even have an en-suite bathroom. However, if a shared flat is not for you, then studio apartments are also available. At the University of Nottingham, Broadgate Park is a fantastic choice for self-catered halls. It is located just off campus and will take you around 15 minutes to walk to lectures. Apparently, Broadgate is one of the most sociable accommodations, so definitely one to consider if you’re looking to meet new friends. Nottingham Trent has some great choices for student housing, located across their various campuses. Gill Street South is incredibly close to the city centre, and therefore perfect for both getting to lectures on time and enjoying the hustle and bustle of city life. New Hall is another brilliant option and is located on the spacious and modern Clifton Campus. To find out more about the best halls in Nottingham, please check out our previous article.
Private Rental Housing
Renting a shared house or flat is normally a very popular option with second and third years. Students normally choose to share with their friends, so this can be an incredibly sociable choice. There are three main areas, which Nottingham students love to live in. First, and perhaps the most popular, is an area called Lenton. Lenton is the hub of student activity, and you can expect to see students around every corner. It is around a 30-minute walk from uni, or of course, there are also several bus lines. Beeston is also a favourable choice and is located a little further out of the city, but you can look forward to a more relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere and lower rental prices. Finally, students like to live in the city centre too, as you will be close to all the action but can expect high rental costs. There are several great letting agencies in Nottingham, to help you find the perfect house. Please check out our previous article here to find out which agencies are the best!
Living at Home
This will not be an option for everyone, but if you’re a local of Nottingham, then you could even consider living at home and commuting into uni every day. You will save a lot of money, however, there may be less opportunities to socialise. With the current uncertain situation due to coronavirus, living with your parents is a safe bet!
So, overall, Nottingham students have four main options to consider for student housing. Hopefully, this article will help you to choose which is best for you. If you’re looking for more information on where to live in Nottingham, then please have a look at our previous article here!
