Academically, Durham is considered one of the best universities in the UK. But it is also a fantastic place to live with a host of innovative and exciting venues to spend your evenings in. To show you what we mean, here are Unifresher’s seven favourite pubs and bars in Durham.
Tin of Sardines
18 Elvet Bridge, DH1 3AA
The aptly-named Tin Of Sardines claims to be one of the smallest gin bars in the world. But, what it lacks in physical space, it makes up for with a huge range of different drinks brands. The team behind the exciting bar choose from more than 250 different gins and more than 50 mixers from across the globe. If gin’s your thing, this one’s a winner.
Shakespeare Tavern
63 Saddler Street, DH1 3NU
Thanks to a (much-needed) drinks revolution across the UK, nearly everyone can enjoy pop-up bars serving the best craft drinks. And while that is fantastic — and it really is — there’s something special about a traditional pub. And the Shakespeare Tavern is just that. Enjoy a cold pint with locals and soak in the atmosphere.
The Dun Cow
37 Old Elvet, DH1 3HN
Another pub which can claim to be part of the dying traditional pub family. The Dun Cow serves reasonably-priced drinks in a venue that is rich with history and atmosphere.
Half Moon Inn
86 New Elvet, DH1 3AQ
This award-winning local is a great place to come and watch a bit of sport over some traditional food and a cold one. The pub has been featured in the Good Beer Guide for three decades, an absolutely epic achievement. On top of that, they also have great deals such as their two gins for £5 offer available on Thursdays.
The Station House
Station House, North Road, DH1 4SE
The fairly non-descript front of The Station House hides a fantastic bar full of brilliant drinks. The pub prides itself on serving real ale and cider, which has seen it win awards. If you’re a fan of great drinks, this is the one for you.
Old Tom’s Gin Bar
33 Riverwalk, DH1 5TL
It seems the people of Durham love a bit of gin (as we all do) and Old Tom’s is taking full advantage of that. You’ll also find a fantastic selection of cheese and meats. To reiterate: gin, cheese, meat. Yes, please.
Old Cinema Launderette
38 Marshall Terrace, Gilesgate Moor Durham, DH1 2HX
Not only one of the most unique bars in Durham, but one of the most original in the UK. The Old Cinema Launderette actually looks like, well, a launderette. The bar puts on fantastic nights of music combined with great drinks and a whole host of fun.
