Nottingham has plenty of free things to do, so you can have fun without breaking the bank. Whether you want to do something indoors or outdoors, from visiting the Robin Hood statue to relaxing in park grounds.
1. Robin Hood Statue
Nottingham is famous for Robin Hood, and there is a 7-foot statue of him placed in the city near Nottingham Castle which has been there since the 1950s. Hundreds of thousands of Nottingham’s visitors have taken their photo with the statue, as it remains an important part of Nottingham’s history.
2. Nottingham Contemporary Art Gallery
The Nottingham Contemporary Art Gallery is one of the largest contemporary galleries in the UK. It’s free to visit the gallery, which also hosts a variety of events, such as talks, performances, and film screenings. The gallery has its own cafe so visitors can buy snacks and drinks if they want to. The gallery is also open every day of the week except Mondays.
3. Wollaton Hall and Park
Wollaton Hall is surrounded by 500 acres of land, which is roamed by wild animals, including over 200 deer. The hall was built in 1588 and is absolutely stunning, and you can explore the grounds by walking on one of the many trails. The park is only a short distance from the city centre and is also a regular location of many events, including sports events, festivals, and the annual Christmas at Wollaton.
4. The Arboretum
The Arboretum is Nottingham’s oldest public park, which is located on the edge of the city centre. The park has over 800 different trees and is filled with a variety of flowers and maintained parkland. The arboretum is also a short walk from NTU’s city campus, making it a great spot for students to study outside.
5. Forest Recreation Ground
The forest ground is a great spot in Nottingham and is the location of many of the city’s annual events, like the Goose Fair. The forest ground also has a few football pitches and a community garden. The park is also dog friendly, so you can bring your four-pawed pets along with you. The ground also has a pavilion with a café, toilets, and a function room that people can hire.
6. Victoria Centre
The intu Victoria Centre is full of shops that you can browse, but it is also home to other things, such as free samples. When new food businesses open in the centre they often offer visitors free samples of what they sell. The shopping centre also has a piano that anyone can play as a way to encourage creativity and music. Often events and displays happen in the shopping centre as well, so it’s always worth a visit as you never know what you might see.
