Newcastle has always had a massive live music scene, whether it’s local bands throwing intimate shows or big names in town for one night only.  With a surplus of venues, it leaves the question, which one is the best? Well, we’re here to give you a rundown of the best venues for gigs in Newcastle.

5. Riverside

Starting the list for the best venues for gigs in Newcastle is Riverside, with a 400-800 capacity it is perfect for intimate shows for small acts/rising stars.

It boasts great facilities with both an upstairs and downstairs bar, a smoking area and an upstairs standing area if you don’t want to be right in the mix.

Located right on the picturesque Quayside it is right next to many bars and restaurants giving easy options for before and after any gigs in Newcastle without having to travel far.

4. Northumbria Union Reds Bar

Address: 2 Sandyford Rd, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 8SB

Up next is the student bar known as Reds. It’s situated in the Northumbria University campus and is an easily located and accessible venue for all.

Its 900 standing and 200 sitting capacity (which lets you choose between staying out the way or diving right in) means bigger shows and a fantastic atmosphere for gigs.

The biggest pro of all is the cheap drinks thanks to it being a student bar. This ensures that your bank will not take a big hit whilst seeing your favourite act. Heads up, this bar is cash only.

3. O2 City Hall

Address: College House, Northumberland Rd, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 8SF

Strongly kicking off the top three venues for gigs in Newcastle is O2 City Hall.  Since the closure of the O2 Academy, City Hall is one of the only big venues left in the City Centre.

It boasts a 2135 capacity meaning its big names and big shows every time its doors open.

With its large stage, a huge floor plan and a seating area above, the atmosphere here is always electric no matter what show is on.

The facilities are also great, with a bar in the main room and an additional one located downstairs to keep queues at bay so you can see as much of the action as possible.

Although drinks prices are a bit steep, it is well worth a visit if any bands/artists are up here as it is guaranteed you will have an amazing time.

2. The Cluny

Address: 36 Lime St, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 2PQ

At a very close second is The Cluny in Ouseburn, with only a 300 person capacity it is a very intimate place for gigs in Newcastle.

If a tight-packed, rowdy gig is what you’re after I can assure you this is the perfect place to go.

The venue has a function room vibe to it with a stage slightly off the ground allowing the bands to be as close as possible to their listeners. This ensures a very personal experience for every show that is put on.

A short walk from the Quayside means after any show you can go straight into somewhere else and carry on your night adding to the appeal of gigging here.

Like others, though drink prices can be seen as a bit steep but don’t let this put you off! It’s still one of the best venues for live music in Newcastle.

1. Head of Steam

Address: 2 Neville St, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 5EN

Coming in at number one is none other than Head of Steam.

This venue is a perfect choice if you are wanting a night out straight after since it’s right in the heart of the city near Central Station.

Being the smallest on the list with only a 90 capacity it also comes with being the most intimate.

Although this means only small bands perform you can guarantee every single person watching knows who’s playing and all the words to every song providing an atmosphere as good if not better than a 1000 capacity venue with fans who are not as in the know.

Hosting a good selection of drinks at a fair price due to it being a chain you can be assured a good night is certain when attending here.

So, those are the best venues for gigs in Newcastle. Think that we’ve missed out anywhere on this list? Don’t hesitate to get in touch and let us know. Likewise, check out our picks for the best venues for gigs in Nottingham.
