Edinburgh as a tourist destination and capital city has plenty to do during the day, from walks along the canal to visiting the beach. But what about when the sun goes down? Luckily for you, we’ve compiled a list of things to do at night in Edinburgh, ready for your next midnight adventure!
1. Sunset on Carlton Hill
When the sky is clear of clouds, why not pack up a picnic and head to Carlton Hill? Watch the sun set across Edinburgh from this amazing vantage point- and enjoy a flask of hot chocolate too! It’s an iconic thing to do at night, and promises one of the most amazing views of the city of Edinburgh. Make sure you take a torch though!
2. Catch a film at The Scotsman Picturehouse
For any cinephiles, nighttime is the opportune time to visit the cinema. It’s one of the easy and enjoyable things to do at night in Edinburgh, with so many cinemas to choose from. You could treat yourself to an extra special showing at The Scotsman Picturehouse. This smaller venue offers a truly vintage cinematic experience, from the bespoke red furnishings to the individual seating lights. Afterwards, why not grab a drink at the accompanying bar! Alternatively, opt for larger chain cinemas like Vue and Odeon being spread all over the city.
3. Head to a hidden bar
Edinburgh is famous for its hole-in-the-wall and hidden bars. Travel back to the 60’s at Lucky Liquor or indulge in speakeasy vibes at Bramble. With so many bars to choose from, it’s one of the most popular things to do at night in Edinburgh. But choosing a hidden bar will make it something a little bit more intimate and different to the usual rowdy bar scene.
4. Go bowling and play arcade games
If you are a fan of pub games, from pool and darts to bowling and pac-man, you need to visit Lane7. Located in St James’ Quarter, this central hub provides everything you could want in a fun night! Even equipped with beer pong, Lane7 is the ideal place to kick-back, relax and enjoy life all night long. You won’t go hungry whilst you’re there- Lane7 also supports a huge selection of burgers, wings and fries!
5. Listen to jazz or other live music
Whether you follow the local music scene or not, Edinburgh’s live music venues are perfect for a fun night! For those in a groovy mood, visit The Jazz Bar on Chambers Street. Additionally, if you just can’t get enough of the music Edinburgh has to offer, go to Sneaky Pete’s on Cowgate! Not only will you have a great time, but you will be supporting local musicians, and getting to see some of the best up and coming bands in Edinburgh! Whether you want to catch a touring West-End production at The Edinburgh Playhouse or an independent production at The Assembly Roxy, the Edinburgh theatre scene will provide a upstanding night.
7. Take a moonlit beach walk at Portobello
Although Portobello is a fantastic day-time destination, it is also a beautiful place to stroll along at night. With the stars twinkling and the moon reflecting off the water, Portobello is peaceful at nighttime and less busy than in the day. If you fancy dinner along the seafront, visit one of the many restaurants along the promenade.
