10 free things to do in Manchester

It is nearing the end of term now, and the student finance that seemed so plentiful in September is now nearing overdraft. And to top it off there are last-minute Christmas presents to buy. But do not let that stop you from having fun! Here is a list of 10 free things to do in Manchester; so you can have a great time without breaking the bank.

1. Frog and Bucket Comedy Club

If you are looking to have a good laugh, then you have found the right place. The award-winning Frog and Bucket Comedy Club is located in the Northern Quarter and draws in fresh-faced stand-up comic hopefuls and experienced comedians alike. This is a great place to hang out with your household/bubble and have a good time. Also, there is a lovely bar onsite where you can order a bite to eat too. And the best part is that as long as you bring your student ID entry is 100% free.

2. John Rylands Library

John Rylands Library is owned by the University of Manchester and is located in Deansgate. Did you know that it is the best example of neo-gothic architecture in Europe? Pretty cool fact if you are into your history. It is a great place to study, but they also run numerous events throughout the year that are accessible to the public if you are ever in need of something to do.

3. The Whitworth

The Whitworth is an art museum that is located on Oxford Road that is also owned by the University of Manchester. They have several exhibitions and international collections for you to have a look at which cover a range of topics. Outside the grounds are beautiful, and there is a park located right next door, which is perfect for a winter walk. And when you need to refuel there is a cosy little café onsite that serve all the essentials: tea and cake.

4. The Imperial War Museum

For those that love history, this one is for you. The Imperial War Museum is located in Salford and is a great day out for all the family. It gives a timeline of war beginning with the Great War right up until the present day. The exhibition halls are super informative, and there are also interactive features to keep little ones entertained (and the grown-ups too). Plus, throughout the day, there are little movies that are screened that explore numerous topics surrounding the war. Whilst there is no admission fee, this establishment is a charity run so any donations are very much appreciated so projects like this can keep going!

5. Science and Industry Museum

  If you are a science lover or just fancy getting out of the house for the day the Science and Industry Museum is a great place to visit. This museum informs you of scientific advances ranging from the Industrial Revolution till now. Once again, there are loads of interactive activities to sink your teeth into that will keep everyone entertained. And any donations to support the museum are very welcome!

6. Manchester Central Library

The Central Library is another fabulous library in Manchester. Located in Saint Peter’s square, it is easy to travel to by bus and tram. The décor of the building is varied as there are really modern parts that have interactive tablets for you to do research, and in other parts, it literally feels like you have stepped into Hogwarts. And the study rooms are super quiet, so it is the perfect place to do coursework.

7. Fletcher Moss and Botanical Gardens

Contrary to popular belief there are some lovely green spaces in Manchester and Fletcher Moss, and Botanical Gardens is one of them. An ideal spot to take a leisurely walk on a crisp winter morning and admire the nature that is on show around you. Conveniently, the gardens are situated between Stenner Woods and the Mersey River so your adventure does not have to end!

8. The National Football Museum

Manchester is definitely a place that is football mad with Manchester City and Manchester United coexisting within one city. So, it is only natural that it is home to the National Football Museum. Explore the history of the beautiful game with interactive exhibits brimming with footy info. Plus, you can take pics with the premier league trophy (that’s defo one for the gram).

9. Manchester Museum

The Manchester Museum is another one owned by the University of Manchester and is a museum that has exhibits that cover natural history, anthropology and archaeology. Situated on Oxford Road, there are several buses that will take you right there. There are some really cool collections that range from the Egyptians to creepy crawlies!

10. Platt Fields Park

Now you may laugh but since lockdown began Platt Fields park has been a social hub for students. Located in the Fallowfield area where the majority of students in Manchester students live. Platt Fields park is so versatile. You could be going there for a nice walk, a bike ride or to meet a Tinder date (socially distanced of course). Plus, the lake is actually really pretty.
