As a student, I’ve spent countless days figuring out cheap things to do in Manchester. We’re always on the hunt for deals, freebies and activities that are fun but don’t cost too much, and fortunately this city has a lot of things to offer. So I’m happy to share with you my top 12 things to do in Manchester for under £10 to help you out. 

1. Explore Manchester Museum

Located on the University of Manchester campus, Manchester Museum houses a vast collection of artefacts ranging from ancient Egypt to natural history. After a few hours of learning about a wide variety of topics, consider having a drink at their lovely and quaint café, the perfect place to decompress. Entry is free but consider buying a souvenir to commemorate the experience.

2. Visit the John Rylands Library

Named after one of the men responsible for Manchester’s industrial past, the John Rylands library provides a mesmerising view of 19th century neo-gothic architecture. Located in Deansgate, the library provides a perfect area to be productive, read one of many manuscripts or just admire the scale and beauty of the building. Entry is completely free.

3. Wander through the Northern Quarter

Known for its vibrant street art, independent shops and quirky cafes, the Northern Quarter of Manchester is perfect for some urban exploration. Whilst wandering the streets is obviously free, you might want to budget for a coffee or a one of a kind souvenir.

4. Attend a walking tour

Join a free walking tour to discover more about Manchester’s history, architecture and hidden gems. These tours operate on a pay-what-you-feel, so a small donation, whilst not mandatory, is certainly appreciated.

5. Catch a performance at the Contact Theatre

Contact theatre, located near the UoM campus, is a performance venue specialising in empowering young, small artists. You can catch a wide range of performances, from dance to spoken word and tickets usually go for less than £10.

6. Explore the canals

Tucked in the centre of the city, Manchester has stunning waterways. Consider taking a walk down the canals, starting at Ancoats. Here you’ll find picturesque natural beauty besides reminders of Manchester’s industrial past only a short walk from the heart of the city.

7. Visit the Pankhurst Centre

Learn more about the Suffragette movement at the home of the Pankhursts, a family well-known for their activism. This museum celebrates the fight for womens’ fight for the right to vote. Admission is free however donations are welcome.

8. Tour the Science and Industry Museum

Industry has always been at the heart of Manchester’s identity. Take a trip to the Science and Industry museum to celebrate this heritage with exhibits on power, transport and the history of the city’s role in the industrial revolution.

9. Grab a cheap eat down the Curry Mile

Only a short walk from the universities, in Rusholme, Manchester’s famous Curry Mile hosts a wide range of delicious, inexpensive food. Stores are open often until late into the early hours of the next day, making it a perfect snack or meal after a busy day. My favourite after a night out has to be the Chicken Shawarma at Shawarma Abo al Abed, just a 15 minute walk from my university.

10. Cycle the Fallowfield Loop

Rent a yellow sterling bank bike and take a relaxing cycle down to Fallowfield, South Manchester. There, you’ll find a  5.4 mile, approximately 30 minute loop with stunning, shockingly green views, still close to the centre. This is great for families and inexperienced cyclists as this route is a 100% asphalt, green corridor, fully away from traffic. Pedal bikes are charged at 50p to unlock and 5p per minute and e-bikes are charged at £1 to unlock and 10p per minute.

11. Take a trip to Salford Quays

Wander around the stunning waterfront in Salford, just a short bus ride from the city centre. It’s home to MediaCityUK, the Imperial War Museum North and the Lowry. Whilst some attractions charge, it is free to explore and appreciate the quays.

12. Enjoy a pint at a traditional Mancunian Pub

Manchester has a rich pub culture and you can experience a pint at a traditional pub, often for less than a fiver. Try the Peveril of the Peak or the Old Wellington for that unique historical vibe just minutes away from the modernity of the centre.

Manchester offers a so many affordable activities and things to do for under £10 that cater to a variety of interests. Whether you’re into history, art, nature, or simply exploring vibrant neighbourhoods, there’s something for everyone to enjoy without spending a fortune.
