Overview

Is the University of Manchester right for you?

Manchester is a big university in a big city. The main campus runs along Oxford Road, just south of the city centre. Most first years live in halls in Fallowfield, Victoria Park or close to campus, so the city is always on your doorstep. You get a huge choice of societies and sport, and a nightlife scene that's a real draw.

The flip side is scale. With more than 46,000 students, it can feel anonymous until you find your people, and you'll need to put yourself out there. Halls aren't cheap, either: most rooms cost well over £150 a week. If you like busy, independent city living, it's hard to beat.

You’ll love it if…

  • You want a proper city on your doorstep, not a campus bubble
  • You want a huge choice of societies, sports clubs and things to do
  • Gigs, clubs and a big night-time scene matter to you
  • You like the idea of a world-famous research university (graphene, the first computer, Rutherford)
  • You're independent and happy to make your own social life in a big crowd

Think twice if…

  • You want a small, tight-knit community where everyone knows everyone
  • You're on a very tight budget: most halls cost well over £150 a week, and the cheapest rooms go fast
  • Busy, noisy city life drains you more than it energises you
  • You'd rather walk to every lecture. Fallowfield halls are around 1.5 to 1.9 miles from campus, so expect a bus or bike ride
  • You want brand-new halls in Fallowfield. The big redevelopment there won't open its first rooms until 2028
