While endless days spent studying in the library can make it seem like university is all work, there are plenty of places in Glasgow to have a bit of fun. So when you decide you need a break what better way to spend it than taking a step back in time and visiting some of Glasgow’s retro gaming spots. From Cocktail bars stocked with vintage games to classic arcades there is a venue in the city to suit any gaming fan. So here’s our round up of the best spots in the city. 

NQ64

Located in Merchant Square, this bar is a must visit for any gaming enthusiasts. With a variety of retro arcade games such as Donkey Kong, Pac-man and Double Dragon. Alongside a collection of classic consoles including the Nintendo 64 and the SEGA Mega Drive, NQ64 can send you right back to the 80s. Whilst you could be forgiven for forgetting that this isn’t just an arcade, you would be disappointed to miss the range of game themed cocktails and craft beers on offer here. Who doesn’t want to try a Donkey Kolada or a Power Star Martini? With a smart casual dress code and only walk-in availability this makes a perfect place for a last minute night out.

If you’d rather have a more relaxed experience, R-CADE at the Saltmarket is the place to go. The cafe, which serves a selection of coffee and cakes, gives you a space to enjoy the collection of board games. Including all the classics, like Monopoly and Operation. Or by booking a pass you can access the retro video game arcade. With consoles from the last 40 years and over 1700 available games, which you can have a look through online, this is a must visit. Prices start at £7.50 for an hour’s access, and with dedicated over 18’s slots or quiet sessions with reduced audio and visual stimulants you can pick the experience that suits you.  

Super Bario

Puns are not the only thing this bar does well. Super Bario is based in the Trongate area of the city and is a versatile venue for all of your retro gaming needs. The bar boasts original arcade games and pinball machines. And, with a selection of Scottish brewed beers from companies such as William’s and West you’ll have a great night here. Or if you have a couple spare hours between lectures you can stick to the soft drinks and coffee when you head down here, as the bar is open from early afternoon most days. 

Level X

Recently opened in the St Enoch Centre in the city, Level X is not just an arcade, but also houses bowling, mini golf and VR experiences. If it is the arcade you have come for you won’t be disappointed. Level X has blended the classic gaming model with the newest technology to reimagine the classic arcade experience. Whilst this can not purely be called a retro arcade, the aesthetic and game options mean you’ll enjoy this new experience just as much as the straight from the 80s venues on this list.  So there are some of the best of Glasgow’s retro gaming spots. Ranging from bars stocked with craft beer and classic arcade games, to the recently opened city additions which are embracing new technology within their arcades. There really is a place for any kind of gaming enthusiast in the venues across the city.
