1. Languages Teacher

Let’s get the obvious choice out of the way. When you study languages, you will invariably be asked whether you want to be a teacher. But this could be the perfect career path for you! You could either teach French to non-Francophones or English to French speakers. The latter option would allow you to travel around the French-speaking world. As a tutor, you would have more flexibility, which would help you move around more. A more permanent position would provide you with more stability. Imparting your valuable linguistic skills onto the next generation would be rewarding.

2. Diplomatic Service Officer

This governmental role would allow you to use your language skills frequently. As a diplomatic service officer, you will analyse events overseas, develop policies, provide consular advice to Brits abroad and process visa applications. Your French skills would be invaluable, helping you to understand French policy, or with French people trying to obtain a British visa. There are a plethora of other French charitable organisations that are seeking someone with your skillset. If you’re looking for a fulfilling job, where you can help those who need it most, international aid might be the sector for you!

4. International Sales Manager

If corporate life is something you’re interested in, this could be the perfect job for you. Pick any business sector, and they will need an international sales manager. I recently met one who worked in publishing. Her job entailed travelling around Europe and selling her publishing house’s books to bookshops. She mentioned that in this role, you can use your French skills in pitch meetings. This job allows you to travel and meet new people. If that sounds ideal, your future career awaits!

5. Translator

Another obvious choice, but a translator is a great career path for someone with a French degree. With the rise of AI, many fear that translators will be the first to be replaced with robots. However, this is not a given. Many companies are seeking human translators who will provide a more natural and seamless translation that AI just cannot do. Whether you’re translating books or company policies, you’ll be in high demand.

6. Journalist
